Mick Nelson, USA Swimming takes a position on www.nspf.blog: an important topic; which will also be discussed this October at the World Aquatic Health Conference.

You have heard the statistics. One in five people admit they fail to get out of the pool to urinate. And 78% of those surveyed are convinced fellow swimmers are the guilty party.

Contaminants such as perspiration, skin cells, cosmetic products, and urine enter the pool water on the body; these interact with the chlorine in the pool, making the chlorine ineffective, and produce disinfection by-products (DPBs), often referred to as chloramines. Documented scientific research tells us people who frequently swim and those on the pool deck are at risk for serious respiratory problems, including asthma, caused by DPBs.

You can be a part of the solution by helping us influence and change societal behavior. Friday, October 18, as part of the Recreational Water Illness symposium at the World Aquatic Health Conference in Indianapolis. You should attend three seminars on the topic of urinating and pool water- and then a workshop to explore action steps to help us make change.  We need you to be there. Without your participation, the situation won’t change and more and more people will be come sick. Eliminating urine from the pool water is critical because there is no other way to inactivate the results from the urine interacting with the chlorine.
