Zodiac iAqualink system startups

My first wireless system.  Installed by outside contractor:  Pentair Intelliflo pump, Jandy Aqualink RS panel, Jandy iAqualink wireless - using the customer's iPhone, with no panel in house - completly wireless.

After installation we find that the 10.8.3 Apple iPhone OS is not compatible with current iAqualink software.  Configuration of system takes two days as we coordinate getting a laptop to owners home that has a Windows OS (or earlier Apple OS).  Installer told me (poolman) that I should be the one to make the systems handshake.  I disagree, along with customer, that installer is paid to get system working - which it was not when we powered up.  Installer tells me that I should have a laptop and/or a Jandy installers remote.  News to me - who's getting paid to install the system operational?  Conversation will continue, I'm sure, on that one. ( It would be nice to have all those tools but, note to installers, let the poolguy know that you're leaving the job with the equipment not operational..and after taking your final check in payment.  :)  )

Currently, the system runs fine.  Configuration is easy enough if you can spend some time navigating thru the iAqualink pages without aid of a demo or help menus.  Jandy's tech support did help me out (eventually - they don't work on weekends) with a longish email of basically screenshots of what the steps are to enable the variable speeds for the spa, pool etc.  No big deal but, again, time consuming w/o online help menus.

Anyone have the shortcut to be able to run the pump from outside (Aqualink RS panel) at high speed to vacuum?  I put it in service mode and I get my preset "Pool" speed of 1500 RPM.  I look to the Intellifo panel and it's showing "Panel Display Inactive" - not able to use that controller to up the RPMs.  Until I hear from Jandy on this one, I'm going to hit "Spa Mode" on the AqualinkRS (preset to 3450 RPM) and then move the toggle on suction actuator  to the pool position.  Clumsy but shoud work.  Anyone else got this figured out?

  • Disconnecting the RS-485 cable from the pump should let it operate in standalone mode. You may need to wait a couple of minutes for the disconnection to take affect. If it doesn't turn off power to the pump and wait until it shuts completely down -- no display and no lights, then restore power.

As for the Jandy setup, set the priming speed, as you indicate below, to the speed you would like for manual vacuuming. This speed is probably not the max speed of 3450. You will probably have better luck with something close to 2800rpm. This is actually a nice feature that Jandy offers as you might want to reserve your highest speed (maybe 3200) for just the spa mode. This contrats with  Pentair controls which always try to prime at their max speed and sometimes fail due to the extra restriction of a suction cleaner (which does not need this much flow--and why you should set yours somewhere around 2800 if you use a suction cleaner). Leave the highest speed just for the spa suction.

You can do the setup of the speeds using the Android app -- just click the web link on the top. It will take you to the same screen as on the computer. You can also use a laptop pool side or even back at your office. Using your own laptop for setup is advisable as you make the install repeatable and familiar for yourself. The router setup for Apple has issues (at least in my experience). Installation can also be complicated by firewalls and antivirus software. It is better to use your own laptop as you will know what protections are installed and how and what you might need to disable.

    • Thanks for your reply.

Currently, the system is uncontrollable - literally.  Heater comes on at random times is big issue #1.  And #2:  after turning off the One-Touch ( running the spa) - the system doesn't return to scheduled low-speed filtration.

Jandy has been trouble-shooting since last week and they say (this morning) they are unable to configure this system and, are sending a new firmware chip for me to install.

Same builder reports similar problems with several other iAqualink systems recently installed.  Local Jandy service station cannot figure these out as well and everything is being kicked back to the Jandy home offices.

Hoping this is just a bad batch we have here and the system eventually gets debugged. Right now I would like to forget I ever saw this iAqualink setup....spending considerable amount of time running around with this one and Jandy seems unable to get it on the right track.

      • Heater comes on at random times: Do you have it set to "maintain temp"? If so, disable this. And while the following is unlikely with a new system, I have to ask if you have a 4 button spa side switch? If so, unplug it and see if the problem goes away. These often short out.

Issue 2: After turning off the spa, it may not return to the low speed until the it encounters the next scheduled ON or OFF time.

        • Maintain temp was never enabled.

          There's no spa side remote.

Jandy coming to site Wednesday to install new firmware chip.

I'm out of the loop now - spending too much time at my computer checking system and then going over to house to see what's actually happening.  If this pool were not 10 blocks from my house I would have turned this over completly to Jandy warranty from the jump.

The lack of an online help manual with iAqualink and, some sort of diagnostics software one could download is a big downside to this system.

          • Installer corrected wiring/config issues.  Working with owner to keep tabs on pool temp - it's ~6 degs. more than hand thermometer reading.  Have calibrated once and will do so again.

            • Temp. calibration is not working, though with the lack of a set-up manual, it's anyone's guess what to do here.  The "Temp Calibrate" field will not accept >4 degs. adjustment.  Not a big deal now - leaves us 2 degs. short.  Did note that as soon as I dropped it to 77 it went back to 78 as soon as I went back to "Home" page.  Current air temp is 68.  It's a new grey plaster pool and, owner and I are beginning to believe there may be better heat absorbtion during sunny days and this big air-water temp.spread is typical of dark plaster etc., etc.

Poolguys beware - this one got away from me.  If the installer doesn't get this up and running (including configuration of pump(s), One Touch and so forth) you are at the mercy of Tech Support at Jandy with a typical 20-30 min. wait for someone to get to your call.

This setup is more time consuming than setting up the Jandy AqualinkRS & One-Touch control panels.  Software compatibility between the iAqualink and iPhone OS is essential to even begin to get this off the ground.  Don't let the installer walk off the job until he's got that issue, in particular,  nailed down.

Again, question to Jandy:  why is there no written/online instructions for this system?

  • Talked to Jandy.  When you're in 'Service' mode on the AqualinkRS you are in 'Priming Speed' on the iAqualink program.

The iAqualink default was 2500RPM but, to bump it up (for vacuuming) you can program the 'Priming Speed' to 3400RPM from your computer.  In iAqualink:  hit 'System Setup' , then 'VPS Setup' and in the 'Priming Speed' field increase the RPM's.  That locks in 3400RPM on 'Service Mode' on the AqualinkRS panel.  No need to adjust "Duration" field next to the "Priming Field" - tech rep said it stays at Priming Speed however long you're in Service Mode.

Need to get out in the field to try this from the panel.  A wireless laptop would be nice in these situations. :)

  • Note:  I did disconnect the RS-485 cable on the Intelliflo but the 'Display Inactive' mode remained - no manual operation.  Call into Pentair on this one

Pentair rep texted me:  hit the breaker to clear the the Intelliflo panel after disconnecting the RS-485.  Will try Monday.
