Using Twitter to Get to the Root of the Media

  • Rating: No Rating
Today all members of the Pool Tweet Group received an email from Maureen Williams that read something like this:

"I read another drowning story this morning calling a "big blue pool" an "above ground" pool. This inflates the drowning stats for permanent pools. How can we get the word out to the media that they need to be clear re: what type of pool was involved?"

I would say that this topic is worth discussion. Let's do some brainstorming; I'm sure that we can get to the root of this issue with the media!

Maureen,

Can you add the story to this discussion, or at least a link to where you read it?

I think that one of the first things you can do is contact the editor of the magazine / newspaper that published the story and ask for an amendment. Most media sources will print corrections in following issues if there was an error brought to their attention.

From that point, I would write an article, or a series of articles, outlining the differences between pool types. A follow-up article could explain how drowning statistics are compiled and how the relate to the pool industry. You could then either pitch this as a mini-series to industry magazines and newspapers, perhaps even the source that brought this issue to your attention in the first place.

You could also publish online. You could create a blog dealing with Drowning Statistics and post weekly updates based on your articles. You could use Twitter to announce your posts as you publish them.

In any case, I would strongly recommend you get in touch with the group / association in charge of compiling and publishing drowning statistics and offer them links to your articles, or copies of your information.

I am sure there will be other ideas, but that's my advice to start! Good luck, and don't be afraid to call on me an the rest of the members for support!
