In my opinion, the primary responsibility of the Sales Manager is to increase revenue. Regardless any internal or external conditions, he must increase revenue. Period.

Since the Sales Manager achieves and succeeds through others, he must be able to help the members of the sales team use their time wisely so that they may achieve to the highest levels of success possible. He must understand and earnestly practice the first law of long-tern business success; In order to… Continue

Problems with NPIRC Pool Plaster Studies

The National Plaster Council (NPC) began working with Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo in 2003 to study the causes of various plaster problems. The following information is a critique on the first two reports from professor Kachlakev (from Cal Poly) and the National Pool Industry Research Center (NPIRC), and contains information that they aren’t telling you.

1. The primary conclusions or suggestions by Professor Kachlakev are as follows: Aggressive water and certain sanitizers are the… Continue

Motor Efficiency

A couple of years ago, Pentair introduced a motor to the pool industry that is a great improvement in efficiency as compared to what we have been calling “energy efficient” motors. This motor is referred to as a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and it is used on their IntelliFlo line of pumps.

To truly appreciate why this style of motor is more efficient, one needs to understand what a power factor is.

Calcium Nodules in Pools

Calcium Nodules in Pools

What are calcium nodules? In swimming pools and spas, they are small mounds, or “slag” piles of calcium carbonate which are formed from material that has been released from the plaster. Here are some pictures of calcium nodules:

In the cement/concrete industry, this phenomenon would be called a form of “efflorescence” (but in keeping with the spirit… Continue

Pool Marketing Predictions - "In Search of 20-10 Vision"

I'm sure you recall that "20-20 vision" is how doctors refer to "normal vision." This means that what you see at 20 feet is the same as what a "normal" person sees at 20 feet. Well, I'm not into "being normal." I want "20-10 vision." I want to see at 20 feet what the normal or average person can't see beyond 10 feet. And that's where our focus (no pun intended) needs to be right now. In the year of Twenty-Ten, we should all be striving for 20-10… Continue

Roof Top Pool or Fountain Construction

Equipment and Hydraulics A roof top pool is much like any pool from the perspective of its hydraulic operation. The location of the equipment is the always of key importance and requires thought as to size and ease of access for maintenance. Equipment which is pl aced in a location that is hard to reach or hard to service is rarely well maintained. We always recommend that the equipment be placed in a way that is enclosed but easy to… Continue

Plaster Flaking or "Spalling"

When cement, aggregate (sand), and water are mixed to form pool plaster, about twice as much water is added as is needed to hydrate (harden) all of the cement. This is done because if the mix is too dry and thick, it is almost impossible to place and trowel the plaster to a smooth finish.

What happens to the excess water? As the sand and hydrated, crystallized cement grains settle, the excess water rises to the surface. This process is called bleeding, and the rising water is… Continue
