NPC Should Step Up

Are NPC leaders really trying to resolve plaster problems, or will they continue to ignore and/or misrepresent the research studies that have already provided the answers? The NPC says that there has been decades of debate regarding plaster problems. Actually, there have been decades of pool plaster studies, but no honest discussions or debates, and no accountability.

There was a time when NPC leaders understood that improper plaster workmanship can cause plaster defects and…

What the NPC is Not Telling You

With a lot of publicity and fanfare, the National Plasterers Council (NPC) recently invited the onBalance group to participate in new test pool studies to determine the cause of plaster spotting, which they claim is caused by aggressive pool water.

The NPC wants the test pools plastered with good workmanship and supervised by onBalance, and then they want the pool water to be maintained aggressive (per LSI) to see if spotting develops on the plaster surface.  The NPC says “the testing…

IT IS TIME TO SEPARATE PLASTER FACT FROM FICTION, AND REALITY FROM THEORY Part 1

FACT and REALITY

Longstanding cement and concrete science has established that calcium chloride-in acceptable quantities-is a primary cause of discoloration in cementitious surfaces, particularly when steel troweled. Further, the Portland Cement Association research performed in 1966 described that when the ratio of cement alkalis to chlorides was low, a light spotting discoloration on a darker background resulted. The white cement used in swimming pool surfaces is a…

Why Acid Wash New Quartz Pool Finishes?

It is understood that muriatic acid can dissolve and etch a plaster surface.  Therefore, why, after working hard to achieve a smooth, brand-new, hand-crafted, quartz pool-finish, would anyone immediately perform an “acid wash” on that pool?  Yes, that would increase the exposure of the quartz color; but isn’t that shortening the life of the plaster and causing future…

Durable & Discoloration Free Pool Plaster

There are proper steps to follow for the making of quality pool plaster, including color, quartz, and pebble finishes.  There are also improper practices that can lead to early deterioration and discoloration. Following is a ten-point checklist that will help achieve a smooth, long-lasting, and discoloration-free swimming pool plaster.

1. Plastering in extreme weather conditions can lead to quality and durability problems. The ACI and PCA have specifically warned against…

Cross-Pollination: The Potential of Industry Outreach

For as long as I can remember, the pool and spa industry has generally behaved as though pools and spas exist in a vacuum, as if they have little or nothing to do with the surrounding environment.

Fortunately, that’s changed for many forward-thinking builders who have become sensitive to the fact that their work exists in context of the entire property. These days, many include things like outdoor kitchens, adjacent hardscape, plantings and a wide gamut of…

Young Professionals Are the Life Blood of Industry Growth

I’ve always liked to think that with age comes wisdom, that as we grow older we become more of who we are.  For those of us entering our, shall we say, more wizened years, we can take comfort knowing that our experience affords us hard-won perspective and insight.

Of course, age also brings with it many effects we’d all choose to forgo if we only could.  When it comes to the smarts we gain along the way, it’s equally true that many of us become rather set in our thinking.…

The Servant Leader

By Vance Gillette

Looking at the state of our industry with an eye toward improving what we do and how we do it, I believe we are suffering from a deficit of effective leadership and have been for a long time.  I see it at all levels of the industry, from dealers to manufacturers and our trade associations, far too many of our organizations are being over managed and not effectively led.

From my perspective, the void is…

ART OF DONE

 By Vance Gillette

Long ago, way back in the 1960s during my early days working in the pool and spa industry, I adopted what you might call a professional and even personal manifesto — an approach to doing business that has served me and others very well. I concocted it myself based on characteristics I saw in other successful salespeople and business leaders and have stuck with it over the decades because of the way it’s fueled success and my own feelings of personal…

Good Plasterers Speak Out

Good things are happening in the pool industry.  At the Western Pool & Spa Show in Long Beach last month, several knowledgeable pool plasterers publicly stated that improper plastering practices will lead to various discolorations and poor quality pool plaster.

Ed Rock, owner of San Rock Plastering in Los Angeles County, taught a class on proper and improper pool plastering practices. He stated that if his…

"Everything we do, at NSPF, we believe will help more people live healthier lives," says Tom Lachocki, Ph.D., CEO of National Swimming Pool Foundation. One thing NSPF does is fund research and invite leading scientists to present their findings at the annual World Aquatic Health Conference. Ernest R. Blatchley III, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, one of the lead researchers in the study referenced in the link below, has been a long-time grant recipient from the National Swimming Pool…

High CYA Issues

Contrary to some misinformation that has lately been floating around, high cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels do not cause gray discoloration, or white spotting (“spot etching” as some incorrectly call it) in plaster swimming pools, no matter what.  And there are several studies that have documented that.

The…

Introduction

Hi all, this is CJ.  I work for the City of Blair, in Nebraska.  I have about 16 years pool experience.  My current project is the ageing pool that the city has, it was originally built in the 1930's.  With a patchwork of renovations since then, I have a pool that requires lots of TLC.  I have been working with a committee to renovate the pool, we are looking at building a small/family aquatic center.  Any tips on what things to do or not do, or to add or stay away from would be appreciated.…
