Hydrostatic Relief Plug/Valve

In our part of the country with a water table that doesn't typically cause any issues because it is so deep we don't use hydrostatic relief valves.  Instead we plug the port in the bottom of the main drains as the pool is being filled.    The other hydrostatic relief plugs not in the main drains (closer to the shallow end) also get plugged.

When the customer every has to empty their pool, we advise removing the plugs just to be on the safe side (even though our water tables…

It's Not All About the Spa....

As we get ready to head into spring and customers start opening their spas, it is time once again to review some important steps that will not only maintain, but prolong, the life of a spa cover. These are great tips to pass along to your customers when they purchase a cover.

First of all, for those who have not used their spas during the winter months, it is important to pull the cover off of the spa and flip it over, exposing the bottom to the sunlight and giving it a…

When Can Salt Be Added?

Although salt water has been used successfully for some time in cured plaster pools, there doesn’t seem to be much scientific documentation on the effects salt may have (detrimental or not) on plaster when it is new and still curing. There seems to be some consensus to wait 30 days before adding salt, yet some say it is okay to add salt within a couple of days of filling the pool. So who is right?

To answer that question, let’s take a look first at what happens in the initial…

Concerns with NPC Start-up Certification Program

The National Plasterers Council’s start-up certification program raises questions on several fronts.

It is confusing and alarming that the NPC’s (new plaster pool) start-up program allows for a negative Saturation Index, as low as -0.7. Three years ago, the NPC declared that any negative SI causes plaster problems and is not to be allowed, and they know that new plaster is weak and more vulnerable to aggressive water than 30-day cured plaster. So what is going on?

The NPC says that… Continue

Myrtle Beach Pool & Spa Show

It was great having the opportunity to see many of you at the show this past week. The turnout was incredible and I believe the APSP is already planning to do another show in Myrtle Beach next year. Thanks for everyone's participation and hopefully we will be able to make this a large regional show for the southeast in the future.

Pool & Spa Supplies as "Retail Therapy"

Ever heard of a little thing called "Retail Therapy?"

I'm sure you have, but for the sake of having something to write about, I am going to give you my definition:

"Retail Therapy" is an integral part of human life, and has been since the rise of the almighty commodity. When life gets you down, go shopping. When life lifts you up, go shopping. When life puts any twist or turn in the road ahead of you, GO SHOPPING.

Even in times of dire…
