Carbon Dioxide in Pool Water #4 of 4

CO2 in Pool Water #4

So how long does it take for CO2 to off-gas after adding acid? Or, why does the “rebound” happen faster in some pools than others, or faster one time than another in the same pool? CO2 off gassing, and its relative speed, are dependent on several factors, which include water temperature, circulation, total alkalinity, ratio of water volume to air-exposed surface, and atmospheric pressure. These factors affect both the rate and the percentage of either off-gassing or… Continue

Swimming With Sharks

Swimming in a pool or spa without any sanitizer is like swimming with sharks. Life is full of risks. We need to manage those risks in our personal life plus protect the lives of our loved ones. Would you let your children swim in a pool with sharks? Of course you would not. Would you let your children swim in a pool without sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine?

What is the risk of swimming in a pool of water without sanitizer? Just three words – recreational water illnesses (RWI).… Continue

Have you renewed your FSPA membership?

"Every man owes part of his time and money to the business or industry to which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere" Theodore Roosevelt, 1908

Things are ever changing in the swimming pool industry and in business in general. The FSPA works as your eyes and ears and then relays important information to you. The great thing is that it is a two-way street; your information and ideas can… Continue

Carbon Dioxoide #3 of 4

CO2 in Pool Water #3 of 4

While some of the following information has already been mentioned, let’s specifically address the question raised at the beginning of this update series. Why does the pH eventually rise after acid initially makes it drop? Again, the answer lies in the fact that whenever the pH is below 8.2-8.3, there is generally more CO2 in water than its natural equilibrium level with the atmosphere. Because of this, the extra CO2 will off-gas into the atmosphere over time. The… Continue

Carbon Dioxide in Pool Water #2

After adding acid to the pool water, the pH goes down (at first) because of the effect on pH of the increasing amount of CO2 (aq) produced by the acid. Shortly afterwards, the pH begins to rebound and eventually can return to its original level. This is due to the equilibrium relationship between the amount of CO2 in the water and the amount of CO2 in the air above the water. This is known as Henry’s Law. Since the acid addition forms more CO2 (aq) in the water than is dictated by the… Continue

Carbon Dioxide in Pool Water

The Role of CO2 in Pool Water #1

While some service techs go about their business taking care of various swimming pools, and specifically after they lower pH by adding acid, they may ask themselves why the pH of the water begins to rebound (rise back up again) afterwards. Also, they may wonder why this pH rebound happens faster in some pools than in others.

The answer lies in the behavior of carbon dioxide in the water. Carbon dioxide (also known as CO2 & carbonic acid) is… Continue

The History Of Swimming In America

Over the next weeks the Pool Genius Network will be presenting a series of investigative articles and interviews relating to the history of swimming. While undergoing the research for these articles a secondary theme began to emerge. The theme was the realization that as an industry we had lost our way. Some time, long ago, we started down a path that has led to many of the challenges we face today, challenges we could have avoided

To begin this series I invite you to listen to an… Continue

Virginia Grahaem Baker law

Lots of pools openings, Lots of underwater scuba upgrades for the Federal Virginia Grahaem Baker law. Just picked up a contract locally. Water cold, dry suit took care of that. Its amazing how many pools are not featuring the new drain covers. The main drains are the most neglected part of a pool and many of them are in bad repair.

Do the Math and Charge for Water Tests!

We have started charging $5 for water tests with purchase of corrective chemicals (instructional sheet given), $10 if all they want are the results (just readings given) unless they purchased their pool or spa from us. We have had this posted in the store for the past year and have received very little objection once explained. And those customers we lost were not really customers nor would they be. But here is the point, when I was explaining to a customer that last year she spent $180 total… Continue
