Drowning prevention nonprofit supports CPSC drain recall

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance urges public pool managers to install needed drain replacements promptly to provide a full season of swimming lessons

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) Board of Directors supports the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) recent recall of one million pool and spa drain covers which were incorrectly rated for the flow of water they could handle, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers.

Ever Noticed Yourself Doing Something You Don't Want to Be Doing?

Have you ever found yourself doing something you don't want to be doing? Or perhaps something you think / know you shouldn't be doing?

I'm not talking about robbing a bank, here. I'm talking about singing along to a song you don't like. Or laughing at a movie that makes you cringe. Or eating a burger so greasy you can imagine your heart valves clogging even as you chew it.

I have a very tight group of friends. We meet every Wednesday night to share some great…

How Effective Are Facebook Ads?

I recently answered a question asked in the LinkedIn "Pool Genius Network" discusion group, "Has anyone tried advertising on Facebook and what were the results?"

The following was my responce.

I have done extensive testing with Facebook ads with interesting results.  First like all ads, it's the headline and copy that make it work... no magic just because it's Facebook.  That said it is best suited to pool service (my…

Diagnosing Problems on Plaster Pools

Identifying Curing Effects on New Pool Plaster

Newly plastered pools must be filled at the right time, and any water exposure must be even and uniform. Filling a pool too early results in a weakened and deteriorated paste surface, especially in the bowl of the pool where the effect is worse because it may be exposed to fill water mere minutes after final troweling. The optimum fill delay (time between final troweling and filling the pool) is at least six or more hours.…

Pool Plastering.

Have read with interest the article on Pool Plastering in a hot climate, this is a very interesting subject and it is just about as important in colder climates as well.

The only problem is that most of the plasterers will not read anything about what they should be doing.

Another major problem is the Pre Packaged Plasters that have the cement added in a factory not one bag have I ever seen with a shelf life warning on them.

As a manufacture of what I consider…

Pool Waterproofing

We have recently been asked to repair two pools built by another contractor that have serious leaks.

One pool has a raised spill over spa that water is leaking through the peblle finish and at the spill over stone and getting behind its brick veneer before it leaks out between its brick veneer and the pool tile line.

The other pool has a vanishing edge with stone on the outside of the vanishing edge that is covered with efforvescience.

Obviously neither pool was…

indoor pool environmental control

I am formally from the UK and have a meeting with a client here on the west coast of canada . I have not yet had the oppotunity to have an involvement with a timber structure with large wall spans of glass and am looking for any advice with environmental control and pool water heating . I am familier with the products available to us in the UK but need to have some knowledge in the north American market . I will not be responsible for design , just want to make sure i have some knowledge to…

Are You Worth As Much As Your Truck?

I know it really sounds crazy doesn't it... but have you ever paused... just for a moment to consider if you really BELIEVE you are worth more than your truck?

Think about it...

When you went to buy it, how much research did you do? Did you try to find the best value? Did you spend a little extra to make it "just right"?

Then..., you make regular payments... each month on its purchase, (all the while it is depreciating, becoming of lesser value).

Then you weekly,…

Plastering Issues on Hot and Dry Days

This is written for builders, remodelers, and pool plastering contractors who are interested in providing a long-lasting and pleasingly aesthetic pool plaster finish, especially colored plaster.

Recent studies by onBalance have determined that plastering in hot and dry temperatures can have a detrimental effect to the quality and durability of the plaster surface. At issue is the fact that when a plaster surface dries out, hydration and hardening stops. This results in a plaster…

When the Best in the World Gets Bested

If I was visiting your store trying to sell you on our line of liquid pool covers and I said, "We've been manufacturing them for 20 years," would you care? No; that's a platitude.

What if I said, "We're very professional, and we'll got the extra mile for you." Would you sign on the dotted line, or roll your eyes and think "Platitude!"

If I added, "We think of our customers as family, and we know that our liquid pool covers will provide you with everything…
