Bicarb StartUps #2

The onBalance Bicarb Start Up method is as follows, including pictures.

Step 1 – Pre-testing the Water

• We Test the chemistry of the tap water that will be used to fill the pool. The key characteristics we observe are pH, Alkalinity, Hardness, Copper and Iron.

Step 2 – Calculating the Chemical Dose

• We Add the Alkalinity and the Hardness numbers together. Then we subtract that number from 500. The result is the amount of sodium bicarbonate in ppm to add. For… Continue

Bicarb Startups #1 of 2

In a nutshell, the “Bicarb Start-up” is a method which helps eliminate the formation of “plaster dust” in new plaster pools and which results in denser, smoother, more durable plaster than other techniques.

When a new plaster pool is filled with typical tap water, it is normal for a small percentage of cement paste at the surface to dissolve into the water, and form a solid calcium carbonate precipitate – which we in the pool industry call “plaster dust.” This plaster dust is then… Continue

Ask these two questions...gain a customer!

Two questions that create “partner-opportunity”

By: Ken Rogner, Corporate Sales Educator, POOLCORP

My daughter, Stacey, has spent a dozen years doing sales management and sales training in the high-end retail and designer jewelry business and I have spent thirty+ years as a sales trainer and manager in wholesale distribution. I thought the strategies for success in selling were a lot different but she says…not!

Certainly in wholesale distribution it’s… Continue

The Five Laws of Change

For centuries, philosophers, teachers, thinkers, artists, and leaders have tried to motivate and guide others with insightful statements about change. And millions of bestselling self-help, change-management, and organizational-leadership books sold annually have at their heart several universal lessons about change.

#1. Change is inevitable.

There is nothing permanent except change. -- Heraprofanity filter removed this wordus

It is change, continuing change, inevitable change that is the… Continue

The Destructive Power Of Complacency

How many times have you been in a situation with an under-performing employee when every week you convinced yourself and possibly others, “Just one more week and he’ll turn around. I know he can do if. If he just gets this next sale… I sure hope he brings in some business soon.”

I have referred to this as the “Mother Teresa” syndrome. Evidence that you are suffering from this near fatal illness are the internal conversations like, “I can help him, he just needs a little more time. I… Continue

Pool Startup Chemistry for Plaster

Four years ago, the National Pool Industry Research Center (NPIRC) at Cal Poly reported that they had studied the effects of three different chemical startup procedures on pool plaster. (Phase 2, October 2005). The three chemical startup procedures were;

• the “Acid” startup – where enough acid was added to lower the pH to 4.5 and alkalinity to zero for three days

• the “pH-Neutral” startup – where one gallon of acid was added to an 8000 gallon pool, then balanced after 3 days

•… Continue

The Best Advice We Ever Had for Tough Times

Many years ago when my husband and I were struggling along developing our business, we attended a seminar hosted by the then-NSPI. It was organized by a wonderful gentleman who was the NSPI Marketing Executive, Bill Markert. Some of you may remember Bill, who was instrumental in developing the design awards program, an excellent program NSPI used to have called "There's a Pool for You", and brought the industry many other great marketing ideas in the "old days".

Bill had a retired… Continue

How A Database Will Add Incredible Value To Your Pool Business

What is a database? A database is a structured collection of records and data stored in a computer system.

Most pool builders try to keep their information organized by using spreadsheets, email programs, sticky notes or constant pushing of paper and forms. Some try to operate on multiple disconnected programs that don't communicate with each other. This approach will soon prove inadequate and not as efficient as a great database program.

Most if not all pool builders, even those… Continue

HGTV Needs to be Brought Up To Date

As I'm watching HGTV tonight about homes with pools in Texas, I'm stunned by the young lady describing the automatic cover as a negative to the pool environment. She described it as ugly and that the home would be more desirable without it.

To his credit, her counterpart brought up the safety aspect.

This was instead, an opportunity for HGTV to broadcast to a sizable audience the total benefit of covered pools (not to mention the convenience of motorized covers). At this,… Continue
