Merry Christmas! A Present For You!

As we approach what I consider a very important celebration I would like to offer everyone a free christmas song. It is available as a free download from This is my husband's band original music site. The Christmas song is a do wop, beach type sound I think all will enjoy. Share the music if you like. It is called "Fall in Love at Christmas". Neal sings back up and plays drums in the song. Go to the site skip the intro page, and scroll… Continue

Be ProActive Before the Drought.

This is the time of year I start to watch the drought maps for my state. As the sites are generally updated twice a month or so to follow them can help determine when to contact local officials and discuss a range of topics. First of all it is important to have a clear understanding of what restrictions take place at each level of drought. Also, how you or the trade organization you belong to can work with the local officials to help provide education to the public on conservation… Continue

We are about to enter the biggest sales season of the year. Homeowners will spend millions of dollars for the holidays. We Are All in This Together

In May of 2003, Natalie Gilbert, a 13-year-old girl was singing the national anthem at a Portland Trailblazer’s playoff game. You can imagine the nightmare when young Natalie faltered under the spotlight of this big event - when the words escaped her and she stopped singing. Maurice Cheeks, the Trail Blazer’s coach walked from the bench to her side, told her everything would be okay, and started to sing with her to remind her of the words. By the end of the anthem, the inspired crowd was… Continue

Opportunity for education and self/business improvment are everywhere!

After a week in Vegas for the APSP Pool and Spa Expo it's great to be home! Had to get back to work to rest up!

However, I just had to write and mention all the great educational, networking, brainstorming, the meeting new friends and seeing existing friends at functions like the Expo, geared and working for our industry. I am convinced more than ever that our industry of design and/or construction of outdoor living environments-watershapes, pools, spas, waterfeatures as well as… Continue

Past Conventions

As the Pool and Spa show comes to an end it reminds me of the first shows and conventions I attended. I believe the first convention type I attend was for Spartan Pools and was held at the Playboy Club in Great Gorge NJ. At that time my sister was still in a stroller and I was around 11 years old. Can you believe my parents took us!! It was fun as we received a lot of attention from all the Bunnies. A cute baby does it everytime. All the guys wanted… Continue

Hi Ray and Rex,
Thank you for hosting the Pool Genius get together at Eye Candy on Wednesday. For the short time I was there it was great to see many of the real faces of the new members of Pool Genius and chat with Ray for a bit. I wish I could have stayed longer. Hopefully we will meet again at the Atlantic City Pool & Spa Show in January.

At this time of the year when all the trade shows are heating up and we are trying to get our ducks in a row for next season why not consider starting a little "GREEN" movement of your own. Over the last couple of years I have been increasingly focused on "green" alternatives for our industry. Don't misunderstand, I am not a fanatic or someone that lives entirely green, actually quite the opposite. My initial motivation was to save money on the consumables that my family uses and as I have… Continue

A very Important Thing to Consider

A few years ago I stumbled upon a book, The Power of an Hour by Dave Lakahni. It is a fascinating book about what an hour of "fearsome focus" on a project can really do to accelerate progress and success. It is about making progress and plans that create forward momentum. For those that don't know me, I am a reader; at least one book every 1 1/2 weeks. For those that do know me, you get the calls, emails, and pleads "you just have to read THIS book." So I made my typical calls to michelle, rex,… Continue

Some of you guys might have been on my page and saw this pic of one or our projects. Well, Ray asked me to tell the real story behind it. For those of you who know Ray, he along with a number of other great members of this network are big advocates of the "no main drains" movement. Well, Ray was in town,… Continue

Pool Lighting Tip!

Hello Everyone! Here is a simple lighting tip that is very green, quite dramatic, and works on typical pool light fixtures.

Try using a colored Compact Fluorescent lamp to replace the 500 Watt Incandescent light bulb commonly used! We use a 11 watt Prolume CFL. They come in Blue, Red, Yellow and Green colors. The drama from this lamp is caused by the travel of light molecules through water, coloring the water and never leaving the confines of the pool structure itself. This makes… Continue

Pushing The Envelope

I read an article a few years back that was written by a man named Vance Gillette, (Surely you know who he is). Anyway, the article was titled "Pass The Passion". In the article Mr. Gillette made the point that the pool guy down the street is not necessarily the competition you should be concerned with. Instead you may want to take a look at the other industries that may be taking a bite of your bank account. Take for example the travel agent in your town that is sending your customers on that… Continue

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act - Introduction

One of the biggest issues facing our industry today is the looming deadline to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB). Not everyone is aware so here is a quick introduction.

VGB is a federal law enacted December 19, 2007 as part of the Energy Bill, HR 6 . It was passed to help… Continue

Vanishing Edge

Our company recently installed a cover on this vanishing edge pool in Weston, CT. I really liked the way that the automatic cover was installed on the pool. The pool builder also had his deck company pour concrete sections to cover the auto cover box. We normally only do 1 or 2 vanishing edge pools per year, however this year we have done four.…

Is Your Glass Half Empty?

Last year I reacquainted with a friend that attempted to climb Everest this past year. We first met in 1998 as he trained to operate my first space shuttle experiment as a "Principle Investigator." It was a very exciting time for me, both Scott and John Glenn studied with intensity as we worked our way through the operations and procedures. There is a lot of training time and complexity in planning a space… Continue
