Our Latest Swimming Pool Design has been the Most Complex and Magnificent

I have videos of the entire process from start to finish at,

I am lucky to have clients that let me build their ultimate backyard dreams that feel more like a natural tropical paradise, than simply a swimming pool. This project was complex and full of surprises, but when… Continue

Worst or Most Challenging Pool Cleanup of the Season

I thought it might be fun, educational and probably stress relieving, to share some of our worst nightmares regarding pool cleanups this year.

My most challenging one was a 48' x 78' x 5' pool. They called me in right around July 1st. Below is a picture of what I saw when I got there.

Unfortunately you can not see the frogs and tadpoles. A few particulars I learned while there on my first visit:

  1. It was a dual…

Swimming During the Winter

Winter has hit North America, whether we choose to believe it or not.

For some, winter means snow days, skiing, hot chocolate and ice skating. For others, it means being forced to wear a windbreaker and full length pants. Whatever winter means to you, I think I can safely assume it means having to heat swimming pools in order to retain comfortable water temperatures.…

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

I just thought I would take a moment and give thanks for all that has been given to me.

I was reflecting this morning on where I came from, where I am, and where I hope to be. I see my life now as truly a gift. There are many things for which I am grateful: my wife, my daughter, my dogs, my job, my home, my community where i live. All of these combine to show me what a fortunate and blessed person I really am.

Please feel free to share… Continue

Defeating the Price vs. Quality Mentality

As a manufacturer, we are many times faced with the challenge of explaining why our product cost more than some of our competitors. Even though I truly believe in the quality of our spa covers, I always dread this conversation. I think most consumers (myself included), look for the best bargain....It is not like I walk into a store saying "hey, where is your most expensive tv...I'll take it". We are born to our personal lives as well as our professional ones. Unfortunately, in…

Are You Paralyzed by Perfection?

At the Pool | Spa | Patio Show in Las Vegas, I was frequently asked about my marketing efforts. It seems that many of you remember me from my emails, blogs, Tweets and Facebook page.

I can't tell you how GREAT that is! In fact, I kept getting asked if I was the owner of the company. That brought a few wry glances because from Grant Moonie (my boss!).

Nope. Certainly not. But I put myself out there for people to relate to. To connect with. I have…

Show that you are participating

This really isnt a blog post.

I will now be writing "like" on discussions, blogs etc, that I enjoy but do not have anything that I feel I can contribute. I will do this until the pool genius network can add like boxes or something similar. I hope that other members will start to do this as well.

I think that this minimum interaction is important to keep members interacting in the blogs discussions and contributing new information to the network.

That is all

"Magical" Hardness-Alkalinity Ratios?

Has anyone else heard of this? In some AFO classes, put on by some Cal Hypo dealers, the recommendation is to raise hardness levels to maintain a hardness-alkalinity ratio of 4:1 to 6:1 or even 10:1. This is not part of the course, but was more an offshoot discussion of balancing pools, and what index is best used – the LSI, or the Rhyzner. Many instructors often put in their own tips to help keep the class interesting, but this one just got me…

required ADA lifts in commercial pools by March 2011

Does anyone know anything about this requirement? A large nationwide pool supply and repair store is sending out emails to large hotel chains saying this will be required by march 2011. They reference which is very confusing . Anyone have any accurate info?

Viva Las Vegas! Sales & Marketing Inspiration Straight from Sin City

As many of you know, last week I was on a business trip in LAS VEGAS! The Pool | Spa | Patio Expo, of course.

I learned a lot, let me tell you. This is the 4th year in a row that I have been there for the show and it is always enlightening, so to speak.

(A little aside before I get started, I went…

I'm giving it away, but no one will come here!

Hopefully you all enjoyed a Happy Halloween full of treats and no tricks. In my eyes there is no greater holiday than Halloween, everything from decorating the house, dressing up in costumes and of course planning the nights route for optimal candy gathering is amazing. My family makes quite an event out of the night, particularly decorating the house and front yard with tombstones, zombies, fog machines, strobe lights, spider webs, everything. The Adams family has nothing on us.…
