2009 A New Year for Pool Safety

As cliché as it may sound, where did 2008 go? It was certainly a fast-paced year and extremely busy in terms of swimming pool and spa safety. In some sense, using a child analogy, it’s as if we stepped out of industry adolescence and jumped right into the frenzy of college freshman mayhem. Perhaps not all of you gained too much weight...

The state of our industry from a safety perspective is actually quite good. While we all felt the pinch of the economic downturn, these times tend… Continue

Green, Green or Green. What is the motivation?

This is a question I asked myself a while back.

After 18 years in the industry I was trying to figure out, What's next? What am I destined to do in this industry? Am I just going to continue with what I am doing?

Let me start with a bit of background.

I started in the pool and spa industry in March of 1990 as an assistant manager for Leslie's Swimming pool supplies. I had never owned a pool or spa, the only exposure to the industry was going to a local chain of pool stores that… Continue

Fork in the Road

Yogi Berra once said when giving directions to a friend, “when you come to the fork in the road, take it.” We all “take it.” We often don’t know where our path will lead us. As we approach the New Year, we often consider if we will take anew path.

My mind this past week has been racing after the first contact I had with my best childhood friend who I haven’t seen or heard form for half my life, about 23 years. We grew up next-door neighbors and were inseparable throughout our… Continue

The Wood Crate In The Barn

Elizabeth lived in small rural town in just outside of Denver, Colorado on a small cattle farm. Growing up on the farm meant lots of time spent in the barn doing daily chores and of course well deserved play time. In this barn, tucked in the corner, was a old wooden crate. It was a fantastic place for her to hold the weekly tea party, or as a stage platform for the never popular barn yard theater productions.

All her youth Elizabeth found multiple purposes for this crate but never… Continue

my pool experience

It all started on day, back in the early 00's. It was a quiet day in suburban MN when I ventured to the local pool supply store. The day included hitting things with an electrified bug swatter, and maybe checking out the sweetprofanity filter removed this wordholland grills, and ripping on starite. It was a glorious day. And that's why I became a pilot. I mean pool lover. Sometimes I forget what I do for a living. Build houses? Fly airplanes? Love pools? Or D, all of the above. It's D.

"Thank You"

To All Members,

I'd like to start off by thanking you all for allowing me the priviledge to be a part of such an amazing network of professionals. A network where a small business owner like myself who feels well versed and educated one day had the pleasure of meeting some truly impressive individuals like Brian Balbo (Gorlin Pools) and Robert Blanda (Mill Bergen Pools) and I realized immediately how much I've yet to learn. While I'm truly blessed with undeniable passion for this… Continue

Keeping up with the new Federal Act

With effective dates for certain Federal requirements around the corner (December 19, 2008) it is more important than ever that pool professionals (yes, that means everyone, because that is the who the customer and the rest of the world see you as) arm themselves with the latest informtation. APSP members can and should access the November 25, 2008 webinar which covered all aspects of the VGB and make full use of APSP literature, including brochures, updates and the relevant standards. Trying… Continue

Another Hot tub trade association?

The other day I recieved my newest issue of Pool and Spa News and right there on the front cover, "New Hot Tub Association Formed", my first reaction was "What?".

As I started to read the article I realized it was an organization that is being supported by true leaders in the industry, including Watkins and started by Andrew Tournas (owner of Thermospas) now that got me a bit intrigued and as I read further I noticed representatives from other associations were bad mouthing the new… Continue

Our Industry’s Advance is in Our Hands

I own a chemistry book that was published in 1849 written by Sulliman. The book is in English – which is rare – since most chemistry and science books of that day were written in German. Most science was happening in Germany. The first Nobel Prize winners in the early 1900’s were from Germany. Imagine that a chemistry book from 1849. This was before many men and women were considered human, before the civil war, about the time when the telegraph and Morse code were discovered, medicine… Continue

Pool Genius Meets Blues Genius....

One of the great advantages of my previous job at NASA and now in the pool industry, is we all tend to meet some really great people along the way. Make no mistake about it, I am just not a "fan" sort of guy. I don't get autographs and rarely take photos of celebrities.

I know so many fellow Pool Genius Members that have built amazing swimming pools for various celebrities. It's fun to talk about with friends, family and customers and it makes one feel good to give back. Recently,… Continue
