Think Different!

A few years back the people at Apple Computer asked us to “Think Different.” It was catchy, memorable, and to the point. Steve Jobs and the rest of the creative genius were doing just that - thinking different. Could we ever have envisioned that apple would have sold 22,120,000 ipods in the last quarter of 2007? Twenty two million ipods in a single quarter. That is enough to to supply every man, woman and child in the state of New York and iPod, with enough left over to throw a… Continue

Is this a time for great success?

We are in a time of many rapid changes throughout the entire world. What does it all mean, and how will it be in the end.

I am no prophet, so I can not say how it will be in the days, months, and years ahead, but I am not without some insight in this matter.

Every day we are presented with opportunities, many of them only barely visible, but if you look deeply, and consider carefully they are around us all the time. There are several things that dull our vision, or even… Continue

Pool Industry Reflections

As I approach the half century mark of my life of which all but six or eight have been in this industry. From going on sales with Dad very young to the entrepreneur that I am now I have seen many changes. In the next few months I will reflect on these with humorous tales and how things not only change but also stay the same or cycle back to years ago.

For now I am going to go on v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n starting Oct. 15th. But for now I have a little competition: Can you name (by brand name also)… Continue

Charge for Design or Give Yourself Away for Free?

Charge for Design or Give Yourself Away for Free?

Charging for design in the pool industry has been a much debated and controversial topic of discussion since I entered my career, designing and building outdoor living environment in 1983. After studying and receiving a bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Texas Tech University I decided that the residential design/build area was where I should focus.

From the very beginning, it seemed that proposed or prospective… Continue

Which is more important, the ability how to build a quality swimming pool, or the ability to run an excellent business?

Most of us have entered the pool industry as "technicians" rather than businessmen. By that I mean we primarily began as either a "sales designer or manager", or a "construction super or service manager" who felt we could do the job as well as others. So in what Michael Gerber, (author of The E-Myth), calls an "entrepreneurial seizure", we became pool business owners. Specifically, we did not attend business school, do not hold MBA's, and are not professional "businessmen", but are instead… Continue

The Upcoming "New" Pool Industry or "What Will We Be After The Crash"

Like the banking and housing industries, the entire pool industry is on the edge of what may be the largest retraction in the history of the industry. Even now the sales of pools are seriously down, but the volume does not even begin to tell the story.

We have just exited a period of time where credit flowed like water. But instead of water it was alcohol and we became drunk on the availability. We bought newer larger homes, we built incredible pools, we owned exotic cars. We entered… Continue

Frequency and Consistency, The Magic of SEO Success

Pause a moment and give some though to the idea of success. Define it, model it, consider it, what makes it "tick", how does it work?

There are many elements and I highly recommend the book "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill if you care to explore a complete discourse on the subject, but at this writing let's just consider two specific elements.

The two elements are, "frequency" and "consistency". Let's also narrow these words down to a specific topic, the topic of… Continue
