Delayed relay

I'm looking for a timed delayed relay that can be activated after about 1 minute. This relay needs to be 220 volts and 40 amps. It's going into a Aqualink system.

  • Here is a time delay you could use: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=delay+relay&um=1&i...
  • The old Compool controls and the new  IntelliTouch systems have an option to turn off the pump while the valves are rotating. I don't think that the Jandy RS or PDA has this option. As far as solutions go, I think that your plumbing bypass is an easy, reliable, and generally elegant solution. If you use a check valve with a 5 lb spring, it won't pass water when using the fountain, but will act as a bypass when the pump is ramping up while the valve is turning. That said, there are some delay relays available. I think that Spa Parts Plus used to sell some, but I don't see them in their catalog. You don't need to find one that is as heavy duty as you asked for. Use the contacts on your existing filter pump relay to send the appropriate coil voltage to your delay relay. Then wire the contacts of the delay relay to open and close the coil voltage to a contactor that supplies power to the pump.
  • about the vfd comments, if you're using the siemens vfd (and have it properly configured) you shouldnt need to throttle back any valves before it changes speed because it has a soft start feature that allows it to slowly increase speed.
  • Sorry, I just saw your using Jandy, but yeah, what I said.
  • If you are using a Jandy or Pentair system and don't have solar in the system you could use the solar port to control your other water feature, it has the delay imprinted in it.
  • I would love to be able to turn a valve first before the VFD pump changes speed...

We had a recent job where we were running a small fountain feature at a VERY low flow rate (probably around 10gpm), and then when the client wanted to turn on the 5 Sheer Descents, an actuator would rotate, and the speed of the pump increased to handle the additional flow (about 90 gpm).

We plumbed in a bypass loop so that when we were just running the fountain we could "bleed off "excess flow into the pool.  This was not done because we needed to (we could simply have turned the pump speed down) but so that when the client switched modes we would not instantly send 90 gpm through the small fountain while the actuator rotated for 15 seconds...

If we were able to delay the pump speed change for 30 seconds, we could have made sure that the valve had fully completed it's rotation before the pump speed ramped up.

  • I am curious. What are you going to do with it? Do you want the Aqualink to activate a relay and then have the contacts close to turn something on one minute later? Or do you want the reverse like would be used with a fireman switch? When you say you want a 220v relay do you mean you want a double pole relay (like is commonly used in Jandy systems) or do you want it to have a 220v coil?
  • I would love to know if there is something like that available as well!  Would be nice to be able to use with VFD pumps...
