Variable speed pump with X-10 controls

We installed a Eco-Star on a X-10 controlled system, After install, all X-10 went dead.  XPF noise reducers have not solved the problem.  Anyone had issues w/ X-10 & Variable speed?  Client is not interested (budgetary) in moving to a control system at this time.

Thanks.

  • Do all Variable Speed pumps create AC noise that interferes with X-10 controls or is this just something unique that the EcoStar does? Does anyone have similar experience with Intelliflo, Jandy's VS pumps, or the Marathon three speed?
  • We found the same symptoms Clint.  Apparently Variable speed pumps are inherently noisy electrically.  We ended up having to install a control system at a significant discount to allow the Client to be able to control his devices that were on the X-10 circuits.  Heads up when installing Variable speed pumps w/ X-10 type control systems.
  • In my case, I wasn't trying to control the pump with the X10. The pump was being controlled by the onboard controller. The problem was with a couple of existing X10 switches for the pool and spa lights. These stopped working when the pump was on, but worked fine if the pump was off. There is something about that pump that produces a junk signal on the ac line that confuses or blocks the X10 transmission.
  • Are you wired in to the comm port on the hayward display board ? Id suspect an over voltage issue on the comm port wires. I"ve not had the oppty to play w/ an x10 setup on the eco pump. I can only imagine emf or overcurrent.

  • Yes, I too discovered that. If you turned off the pump's breaker the X-10 works fine, so it definitely is junk signals in the ac line caused most likely by the power supply of the pump.  I don't have a solution to make the X-10 work again, but there are some low end radio frequency remote systems.
