White buildup on the deck of indoor pools

We have a problem with the indoor pools we deal with. Many develop a white hard residue. We have tried just about every chemical you can imagine. I don't think it is calcium, but dried up residue from the pool water which could entail the chemicals, oils, etc. Any ideas on a chemical that could safely remove the hardness? We have tried hydrochloric, bleach, phosphoric, tile cleaners, etc.

When posting problems like this it is good to identify the nature (material) of the deck that is staining and in which direction the water is draining -if at all. It is als very helpful to have some details about the residuals in the water: FAC; pH; Calicum Hadness; Tot Alkalinity, clarifiers; using Cal Hypo or Sod Hypo?, Stabilisers etc etc....

  • Chris, thanks for responding. This photo is an extreme case. We have this problem on all types of surfaces, epoxy stone, tile, concrete, etc. The sanitizer doesn't seem to matter. I think this is a combination of all the chemicals that go into the pool, body oils, etc. In time, it seems like many indoor pools have this problem. I have thought about sending samples into a lab that could analyze the deposits, then come up with a chemical to dissolve the buildup, but haven't gotten around to doing that. We also need to analyze the cost in doing this versus how much of a chemical we can sell that solves this problem.
  • What are the pH levels on these pools?
  • Wes, this is common, albeit not this bad, on many of the indoor pools. It is not on the tile line. It is on the deck, and is more prevalent in the heavy traffic and low areas. We have tried just about every chemical imaginable with little success.
  • Bill, Is this also along the water line? Is there dripping from the ceiling?
