Kevin Woodhurst - Advisor

3423448057?profile=originalKevin Woodhurst

Pool Construction and Service Advisor

Kevin Woodhurst has been involved with construction and design since he was in high school over 30 years ago. An avid student of the construction trades he possess many skills beyond a design or a vision of what something should look like when it’s completed. Always willing to jump in and learn a new skill Kevin has amassed a broad range of experiences within the construction trades and beyond.

Kevin has always been a hand’s on owner or manager preferring to know and understand the processes rather than count on what others say. Kevin has gotten involved on every level not only in the pool industry but also in Landscape Design and residential construction. Kevin possesses knowledge at nearly every level and continues to be a student to everything he encounters.

After spending 13 years in the USAF and National Guard Kevin embarked on a mission committed to excellence within the construction industry before moving to Arizona in 1996 and meeting Rex Richard where the two of them worked closely together for more than 6 years.

In 2003 Kevin moved on to create an award winning pool company Precision Pools and Spas which from 2003-2007 was one of the fastest growing pool companies in America. Maintaining a flawless Registrar of Contractors record as well as creating an organization that did business in a way that many said would never work was Kevin’s primary motivation.

Kevin hired many people from outside the industry and trained them himself many of which have gone on and either started their own businesses or now hold key positions within other companies. He says he has had the privilege of working with many exceptional and talented people willing to share his vision of excellence.

Precision Pools and Spas was sold to a competing Pool Builder in 2006 and Kevin stayed on to work through the transition. In 2007 Kevin moved on to a consulting role in the industry and has continued to hone additional skills. In all Kevin has been involved one way or the other with the design, sales or supervision of nearly 4000 projects. Vance Gillette - Adviser

3423447991?profile=original  VANCE A. GILLETTE

Vance Gillette has been active in the swimming pool industry for over 40 years.  He started with Arneson Products, the manufacturers of the Pool Sweep at the age of 18.  His career began in their boiler room (Telemarketing Department) “dialing for dollars”.  Vance’s early efforts helped establish the automatic pool cleaner segment of the pool industry, as we know it today.

Mr. Gillette has traveled extensively throughout the World, first as an advocate for the Pool Industry and more recently as a spokesperson for the “backyard paradise”.  He has spoken at numerous Pool Shows and other trade meetings, and has published many pieces in Pool and Spa News.  He is also affiliated with the Sales Marketing Executive Association and has completed the American Management Association Senior Executive Management course.

According to Pool and Spa News, his commentary, which appeared in a 1990 issue, evoked “the single greatest response of any editorial, idea or suggestion offered in the history of the swimming pool and spa industry” More recently his articles have covered other aspects of our business, including the political causes of “cocooning”, an analysis of how swimming pools save lives, and the trend of bundling services in the American backyard, including pools, landscaping, lighting and other lifestyle products.

Being known as the most outspoken advocate of positive promotion of pools and spas, Mr. Gillette was asked to be a guest speaker at the 1993 National Spa and Pool Institute CEO Conference, which comprised of the “who’s who” of the industry.  In addition Mr. Gillette continues to remain very active in the National Spa and Pool Institute by serving on the Strategic Planning Committee and having previously served on the Manufacturer’s Council and Promote Committee.

Vance Gillette is famous for his relentless pursuit and dedication in delighting the customer and growing the swimming pool and spa industries.

Ken Rogner - Adviser

Ken Rogner
POOLCORP, Corporate Sales Trainer

Ken Rogner graduated from General Motors Institute in 1965 with a degree in Industrial Management but left GM in 1967 and has been in the swimming pool industry ever since.  He began the wholesale division of Cinderella Inc. in Michigan in 1969 and worked with that company for 17 years. He sold his share of that company and in 1986 joined three other partners in the acquisition of Benson Pump Co, headquartered in Rockford, IL.  He was the President of that equipment distribution company for the next 13 years.

On Jan 7, 1999 the sale of Benson Pump to SCP (today’s POOLCORP) was completed and Ken had a two-year contract to help facilitate the consolidation of Benson’s 20 distribution centers with the SCP network.  In the summer of 2000 Ken began working with the Director of Sales Development as a Regional Sales Development Manager and eventually became POOLCORP’s Corporate Sales Trainer in 2005.

Many of the classes Ken teaches are web-seminars but he also teaches “live” classes (about ten various Boot Camps per year) at the EDGE in Plano, TX.  The EDGE is POOLCORP’s state-of-the-art training center.  He also helped in developing a number of sales workbooks that the company uses as well as a series of webinars that teach all of the company’s B2B and CRM technologies.   He has also had a number of his sales-education articles published in Sales and Service Excellence magazine.

Ken and his wife (of 45 years) Pat love to travel and have visited every continent (except Antarctica) and more than 80 different countries. They say, however, that there are still lots of places left on their “Bucket List” so they are not about to quit traveling.

Community Rules  (Site Rules)

Registering and participating at constitutes agreement to abide by the Peak Dynamics LLC Terms of Service (Peak Dynamics LLC is the company that owns this website). We reserve the right to modify these rules at any time without giving prior notice to you. Spammers - don't bother registering! Your posts and accounts will be deleted without warning. We vigilantly monitor for SPAM and you will be wasting your time and ours.

There is no charge for joining this Website! This is a community of individuals who share a common interest in the pool and hot tub industry. Please think before you post and keep your comments limited to the topic at hand and above all be nice. If you come across any violations to these guidelines or have any problems navigating the site, do not hesitate to let us know through the Contact Form. We'll be happy to address your concerns.

Friends don't always agree on everything or even on most things. They can agree to disagree. When that happens, they try to keep their discussions logical and free from name calling and so forth, or more often they just spend their time on other topics. They don't take every opportunity to express their disagreement, incite argument, insult each other, and fan flames. When they are incapable of avoiding this sort of thing, they become much more disruptive than welcome.

Most of us, while we welcome perspectives on all sides of any issue, would not invite a frequently and apparently intentionally disruptive or rude person to a gathering of friends at our homes, nor to any other gathering of friends that they are hosting. With this in mind please take some time to review our site guidelines:

 Be Courteous!

We aim to ensure that the website is an enjoyable place that you want to visit time and time again. Our underlying philosophy is that the strength of the member relationships we build here is what sets us apart from the other boards - we are friendlier, more civil, more insightful, more mature and more fun.

    * Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so  respectfully and thoughtfully.

    * Do not post unsubstantiated gossip, libelous remarks or directly misleading information.

    * Stay on topic by keeping discussions relevant and on track.

    * Do not post the same discussion more than once or in many websites.

    * The language of this website is English. If you are not a native English speaker, do your best. We are glad to have you as a member and will be supportive and polite.

    * Be mindful of yourself and others. This website is not a democracy; it is privately owned and we make the rules. If rules are violated we retain the right at our discretion to remove, edit or delete posts and if necessary ban or remove members. Any abuse toward our staff may/will result in immediate suspension of your account. Complaints about moderator decisions may not be made in posts; instead send a private message to a moderator, administrator or use the Contact Us form to reach the owner Cruisers Website. If a moderator deletes or edits one of your posts and you disagree with the action, contact the moderator concerned. Do not repost deleted material.

    * We take the "be nice" rule VERY seriously! We do not tolerate ANY rudeness.

Be Appropriate!

Please don't post it here if you wouldn't say it to your grandmother. Posts containing explicit, obscene or vulgar language, images or links to websites with adult content/images or punctuation marks designed to "trick" our obscenity filter will be removed. Discussion of politics and religion is permitted only in association with the topic of this website.

    * Participants may not send out SPAM via our Private Message system.

    * Trolling or cyber-bullying are NOT allowed and are grounds for account restriction or banishment. Trolling on this board includes posting controversial and often irrelevant or off-topic messages with the intention of (or anticipated result of) baiting other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal, harmonious on-topic discussion, especially when a pattern of such posting is apparent.

When this happens please do NOT start another thread asking why the original post/thread was pulled the moderation team will either return the post/thread or communicate with the members involved about it being removed permanently and why.

Our moderation team takes every effort to make sure members are aware of our rules before issuing an Official Warning or a Strike. It is customary (but not required) for the moderation team to send a Private Message (PM) to the member informing them of our rules and asking them to adhere to them in their ongoing participation.

Once we know a member is aware of our Community Rules and we see that he/she has violated them, we will issue an Official Warning. Following the Official Warning we use a 3 Strikes and you are out policy. If the member continues to violate our Community Rules we will give them a Strike for each violation and on the third Strike you will be banned. It is up to the moderation team to decide if this is a temporary or permanent ban.

Phil Saltzman - Adviser

Phil Saltzman, National Director of Sales
Meyco Pool Covers

I grew up around pools.  Even as a kid, you might have even said it was inevitable I’d work in the swimming pool industry.  From the time I was 8 years old, I worked on swimming pools.  My parents bought a Doughboy above ground pool at that time.  As the oldest of four boys, it became my responsibility to take care of that pool (I.e., vacuuming, chemicals, etc.).

When my parents moved to a larger home, they also “moved up” to an inground swimming pool by purchasing a Heldor pool for their Long Island home.  It was also at this time, as my knowledge of pools grew, that I started offering basic pool service to some of my neighbors, as well as customers along a well established newspaper route I kept as a teenager.  Even when I went away to college, I would spend my Summers and Winters working at the Harrows retail store in Melville running their water test counter and promoting chemicals and other pool products sold by that large retailer (as well as their Christmastime products).

When I finally graduated from college (with degrees in History and Economics), it did not dawn on me that I would be heading back to the swimming pool industry.  However, after less than a year of working for a major New York bank, I made the realization that the pool industry could hold some wonderful opportunities for me.  It was at that time I was hired by a major manufacturer of safety covers.  That was nearly 20 years ago.  Since that time, I have embarked on a career involving sales, marketing, tech support, and field training for safety swimming pool covers.  I concede that I still learn new aspects about this wonderful product and from the many people I work with.  And I am happy to share the information and experiences I have gleaned through the years.  I am now the National Director of Sales for Meyco Pool Covers, the inventor or founder of the safety cover (since 1957).

If you have any needs, questions, or concerns regarding safety covers, I will do my best to offer you a solution, advice, or suggestion on how to best deal with your unique situation.

    (Adopted by VGB and ANSI-7)

Steve Barnes has been active in swimming pool research and development for over 24 years.  His career began as a lab Technician for Caretaker Systems, rising to become Director of Research & Development.  Mr. Barnes holds eighteen Patents, the first of which comes from research focused on cleaning, circulation, and suction safety systems.

Twelve years after joining the pool industry, Mr. Barnes founded Innovate by Design where he enjoyed success working as a sole proprietor, designing several pool industry products.  These years working alone proved to be transformational, teaching the value of like-minded organizations, something he missed despite financial success.

Acting on this realization, he joined Paramount Pool and Spa Systems, a team of extremely motivated professionals that demand the best of each other.  This came at a time when the pool industry found itself under the media microscope following several tragic suction entrapment accidents.  While following the developing story he observed the solutions being promoted were narrowly focused on one of the known hazards.

By attending the first NSPI symposium for suction entrapment avoidance, it became clear only a handful of people understood suction and what was really causing entrapment injuries.  One of those was Ray Cronise, a retired NASA scientist demonstrating the physics of suction, sending the one solution crowd into a tizzy.  With Mr. Cronise’s encouragement and the support of Paramount, Mr. Barnes volunteered to share twenty-years of uniquely focused experience in the hope of helping an industry solve a growing crisis.

It did not take long for Mr. Barnes and Paramount to recognize this was an expensive endeavor, making the move to Pentair Water Pool and Spa a natural solution for achieving goals much larger than any individual.  Pentair had several people working in this public arena while wearing multiple hats, and with two approaching retirement there was a need for more help.  The result was a new, full time position, Product Manager, Safety and Compliance, the position Mr. Barnes fill today.  In open discussions with Paramount, they encouraged Mr. Barnes to make the move in the hopes he could best use his experience as a researcher and innovator.

This is only part of what motivated Mr. Barnes to work in the arena of codes and standards; the other reason is professional fireworks.  Yes, fireworks.

The same year, Mr. Barnes began his pool industry career, his girlfriend’s family invited him to help shoot a fireworks display for a large wedding.  At the time her family owned Fireworks Productions of Arizona, a professional pyrotechnical company, designing, producing and discharging fireworks displays throughout Arizona.  With the first boom, Mr. Barnes was hooked and soon he was helping shoot fireworks several weekends a month.  Over the course of two decades he and his team have come to produce at least two televised fireworks displays each year. The Fiesta Bowl Block Party, which rings in the new year, and another celebrating America’s Independence Day with a 40 minute display synchronized to music.

What is the connection between fireworks and swimming pool safety you ask? The answer is permits, codes and inspectors.

Professional fireworks, being dangerous and highly regulated, require the knowledge and application of safety standards and codes.  Before the show can light up the sky, the pyrotechnician and the fire inspector must agree all codes and standards have been followed.  As with pool codes, there is room for interpretation, and without the inspectors agreement and permission, there is no show.  After 24 years, Mr. Barnes understands the importance of applied safety, knowing the law, and how it will be applied by the inspector.  His goal is to share this insight so everyone can share in extreme success, while protecting public safety.

Mike Hermann - Adviser

3423448017?profile=original Michael K. Herman (Mike)
President, Opyne Capital Corporation

Mike has over four decades in consumer lending, specializing in swimming pool loans.

Early in his career, Mike spent time in management positions with some of the nations leading lenders including, First Interstate Bank, Citibank, and Well Fargo Bank.

Having a reputation within the banking community for producing profitable portfolios, Mike was called upon by various regional banks to produce swimming pool loan portfolios of varying sizes.  In 1986 while completing a bank project the nations largest swimming pool dealer contacted Mike to create a finance office to facilitate increased pool sales.

Realizing the opportunity, Mike assembled the team of swimming pool lending experts that became Opyne Capital Corporation.

Opyne was the first comprehensive finance office specifically focused upon the pool lending market.  In less than a year empowered by the new finance office the large pool builder increased financing approval rates from less than 30% to over 90%.

Opyne Capital Corporation, d.b.a. "Finance Office", grew from that point into an office servicing more than 100 pool dealers in 8 states, and a leader in "online" credit application processing for the swimming pool industry.

In response to the current credit crisis, Mike has designed a "self insured" pool financing program that is currently being negotiated for approval with several banks and finance sources.

Rex has pioneered the applications of energy efficiency in the pool industry recognizing the correlation between high flow, low resistance, and low horsepower to accomplish the circulation and filtration needs of a swimming pool.  Rex instituted the use of now popular multiple speed pumps, large pipe size and high flow cartridge filters in 1983 as a standard practice.  Since then Rex has continued study of new was to improve energy efficiency in pool construction.

As a student of energy efficiency and solar contractor, Rex also extensively explored the use of solar applications in pool construction.  To Rex's credit are the first known photo voltaic powered pool in Arizona (1983), and the design and construction of a "passive solar" pool filtration and circulation system by use of "thermosyphon circulation".

Rex also pioneered, studied, and eplored the use of ozonation you pool water sanitzation, beginning in 1983 with the first "Hydrozone" installation in Arizona.  Rex has engineered, sold, and installed over 4000 ozonation systems in his career as a builder, while building nearly 4500 pools.
