Clear Slime? Staining??

I have a salt pool that is having some issues, I hope someone can point me in the right direction.  Here are the specs;

- new plaster in December 2010, dont know start up procedure or type of salt added.

- chronic low Alkalinity (suspect acid start up)

- salt pool / water balanced and readings in line / waiting for metals test results

- phosphate levels low, under 200.

There is slimy feeling on the plaster, no visual signs of algae and pool is serviced and brushed 2x week.  There are also pin head stains starting to appear in the corners of the pool and on the steps.  The entire pool deck and coping is done in flagstone.

Help???

  • Apparently, the water is not aggressive.  However, need to know the CYA level to be sure. Would like to know the color of the "pin head" stains. If the high calcium hardness is climbing rapidly without a logical reason, then perhaps the plaster surface is deteriorating due to poor quality.  A check of the tap water calcium level would also help.  An acid start-up could contribute to this issue.

  • Ph 7.6  / CH 570 / TA is now 80, started at 20 / tap water TA is 90

  • Since your alkalinity is low, it is also possible that the slimy feel is from aggressive water dissolving away pool plaster.  Perhaps you could post the actual low alkalinity reading, the calcium hardness, and pH of the pool water.  Need to know the color of the pin head stains. Is the plaster finish typical white plaster?

  • The stains could be mottling caused by high calcium hardness levels in the water...

    slimy feeling could be just incredibly smooth plaster....see what happens if you go a couple weeks without brushing.
