Has anyone ever seen Black Algae push through tile and plaster before? I have pictures that I can email and a sample I can send. The look and texture of this substance seems a little different than the black algae I have encountered before. If anyone has any info. I would surely appreciate a response as soon as possible.
Bruce,
Thanks for your reply. It does not bleach out when exposed to chlorine. This pool does not go untreated. We actually built the pool almost 3 years ago. The substance is actually breaking through the plaster and tile. When I say breaking I mean cracking the plaster and pushing out the tile. This is not a stain. Its almost like tar. Can you send me your email address and I will send you some pics
The first question I have is, does it bleach out when exposed to chlorine? Was this pool abandoned or left untreated for an extended period? I have seen black molds go quite deep in plaster in pools that were untreated for 1 or 2 yrs. In these pools, the plaster and grout is very porous and chalky requiring replacement.
If the black does not respond to chlorine, think manganese. This metal produces a black stain that will go very deep or through plaster. In my experience though, manganese is only seen on the pool floor and not in the tile line. I know of no way to remove manganese stains that are well established.
