Bruce,
Go to the Texas Dept of Licensing and Regulation website and search for electrical licenses. The one we have to get is the Residential Appliance Installer's License. I bought the 2008 NEC codebook and it is TOUGH to use. So I bought an exam guide by Dewalt and called the author, Ray Holder in San Marcos. He referred me to a guy named Charles Rogers there in New Braunfels. He has taken the test and passed it, but told me it was the most difficult test he has ever taken on this subject. Very poorly done and organized, like they WANT you to fail it. He is in the NEC code daily, and said he made an 87 on the test. He will be the one doing the prep course at the APSP convention and show in San Antonio in Feb and says there is no way to teach this class in two days to most folks. He is developing the prep course curriculum right now, and said to just to take the test and see how I do. You will have to send in an application fee and get a piece of paper from the state authorizing you to take the test. I suggest contacting Charles and see if he has any new info. If he does, please share it! I have lost his number, but I'm sure he can be found in New Braunfels. Please let me know if you turn up anything new, and I'll do the same. I'll probably attempt the test late this month or in early Jan. Thanks!
Hi, Bruce! Yes, I believe I had followed that and I do think the pool lobbying group will introduce our own licensing provisions for Texas at the next legislature. I helped lobby some for the last legislative session in Austin and saw the licensing proposal they were working on. It looked pretty good to me. If you worked for Barbara and Leroy and the Laynes you certainly worked with the best! Fine folks, indeed! I think Gail Layne is still running Modern Pools and what a lovely and sweet lady she is. I have always been in favor of the "right" kind of licensing for the Texas pool industry.
