I've spent the last few weeks completely revamping our website, and now that I have something worth showing I started doing some research on search engine optimization. That's when I stumbled across this little gem.

Even if you have no website, you should play around with this tool. Want to see when homeowners are shopping for chlorine, inflatables, liners, covers? You can even compare google's results to your own business' to determine if you are on par with the rest of the industry (by downloading the excel file and creating a graph). It's also regional, so, if you are a manufacturer, you can see in which part of the country the interest lies. ...judging from last years data, I have to move to Alabama. The possibilities are immense. • Google has a lot of tools for optimizing. Go to http://www.google.com/services/biz1.html and fool around a bit. Building a sitemap is supposed to be a big help in SEOing. You can submit your sitemap with Google's Web Master Tools.

Also, as Rex recommended, you can submit your site to Alexa. If I understand it correctly, all the search engines pull data from Alexa to help build their Snipet.

For the most part, though, I figured out what the highest ranking keyword was that pertained to pool liners, typed that in, saw who ended up in the highest spots, and tried to imitate their keywords, description and titles. https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal is the place to go to see how keywords rank.

I believe (and I'm no expert) that the content of a website has more to do with how highly you rank in the search result.
