All tile pools in winter

A customer has asked for a price on tiling his entire pool, walls and floor. It is a 20 year old gunite pool inside of an older concrete pool. Typically, the winter water level in a gunite pool will spall the plaster over time. If the pool is tiled, the tile could be damaged. How could we avoid the damage and get a 30 year tile job in the Kansas City area?I am currently thinking sandblast, Throughseal, tile over thinset, then grout. What, however is the best way?

  • My first question is WHY is there a pool within a pool? Gunite within concrete...

Did the first pool (concrete) fail, and if so why. When I see a pool within a pool, I typically recommend the entire shell comes out, or I walk away.

If the underlying shell failed, and the problem (often soil movement) was not rectified, then the second shell is bound to fail at some point in the future too.

I know there are guys in the NorthEast who do all tile pools, so it is possible...

I think the protocol for something like this calls for much more than just Thoroughseal though. I sugest calling someone like Oceanside Glass Tile and speaking with their technicians about what they would recommend. Their tile has been used extensively for all tile installations over the years, and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.
