I love this discussion. I can honestly say that sharing information - as opposed to selling products - has brought me more loyal, long term customers over the past few years than I can count. When you offer value you are offering respect to your readers. When you are selling, you are just trying to get their money. No one likes that.
It may take longer to get a sale when you are taking time to build a relationship, but that sale will have a strong foundation and continue expanding. Also, when one reader sees value in your information, they are very likely to pass on that information and recommend you to others. When all you do is sell, you are not going to get recommended in the same light.
