Connect old concrete to new.

I am currently doing a retro that is going from basic to full on. Previously there was a water feature with basin at base which overflows to pool. We will now be cutting the poolshell and removing this section, which later will be reattatching with new concrete to existing to made new feature. The question is had anybody had experienses with a product known as Parchem's repair HB40 FOR CONNECTING NEW CONCRETE TO OLD.
Previously we chemi anchored new rebar, weldcrete old concrete face and rawseal joint prior to spray. I've been told this product is supposely better long term due to its bond reaction.

  • When you cut into a concrete structure there is always a risk and there are many ways to do it. I suggest you break out the exsisting concrete and exspose the reinforcing steel weld new steel to it and form your new shape and before you spray the new concrete put in a product called KUNI Seal that will exspand and seal the joints between the old and new. As a rule i cut a grove to hold the Kuni seal.

There are several other types of sealants of this nature in the market place but joining the steel by welding is the key to success.

  • Thanks Kevin, yes we use weldcrete all the time with simular prep as you. It was just suggested to me about this HB40 product, and wanted to see if anyone has experiences with it. Looks like we are both doing the right thing from lack of replies.

  • Not familiar with this product but have used the weldcrete for many years without any problems.

The key is to thoroughly clean the surface by removing any greases and oils with say Tri-sodium phosphate (if it's available) and then etch it with muriatic acid. Be sure to wash completely with water to remove acid and any loose concrete material.

We have done this when renovating when we may add a bench, step, swimimout, etc..  Repairing crumbling bond beams, and setting new coping.

Laticrete has some great products too. You may want check them out.
