In the northeast our service business is very seasonal and we only have about 7 months were there is a huge demand for pool service techs and then the other 5 months are very slow. We have found that the H2B work visa programs have helped us to expand our business because we are able to get a group of seasonal employees that work very hard for a 7 - 8 month period and then they go back to their countries in the winter. Over the past 2 - 3 years the H2B program has deteriorated and we have found it is very difficult to get our workers back in the spring. Last year we were able to find a ski resort in Colorado to take our employees on a extension visa so that we could get them back this spring. There have been some recent governental changes that have changed the program making it more difficult to place our employees on extension.Has anyone had any success finding winter extension jobs for H2B workers? Is anyone interested in exchanging employees for opposite peak seasons to help expand your business?

  • James,

It is funny that you should say that but we have tried recruiting some people from technical training schools and believe it or not we have not had much success. I think this is for two reasons. One many of our positions are seasonal which we require an employee to get laid off over the winter and I think that many people are looking for the year round consitent job. The second and what i think is the biggest obstacle for us and many other pool companies is that there is a stigma around the pool industry and i feel that people are hesitant to try to make a career in the pool industry. Where are you from James? Have you noticed similar problems when trying to hire ?

    Bill,

This is just a thought, but have you inquired at the local trade schools or tech schools to see if there are any students that would intern at your establishment? Your company has a very prestigious reputation you would think some of the students would want experience with your company on their resume.
  • Luke,

i have been trying to figure out how to send a private message but i am not seeing that as a option. Can you point me in the right direction.

Send me a private message and I'll send you my wife's contact info. She works in immigration and would know the answers to your questions.
