ionization, ozone & UV for pools

I have been using ionization, ozone and UV now for the past 20+ years. I have gonethrough the problems of staining plaster, turning light rings black, and some ofthe other drawbacks.  Some of theproblems I have managed to conquer and some of them remain beyond mycontrol.

Staining seems to be the symptom that is widely used to attack ionization. I found that balancing water weekly or bi weekly to the Saturationindex has limited the dropping of metals to the calcium laden poolwalls.

As for the light rings, it is a matter of proper bonding. If the pool and lightcircuits are properly bonded the problem never comes up. If the contrary is truethen the light ring maybe covered with a black mineral coat. This coat is formedbecause of electrolysis and may be cleaned or as I have done in some cases, aclear powder coat may be done to the light ring to eliminate the problem.Bonding the equipment in the equipment room is also crucial.

Over the past 25 years, I have seen a lot and almost every pool I encounter has itsown personality. Our company has a maintenance route in Southern California thatspecifically maintains these systems.  Our client base ranges from those that are extremely allergic to chlorineto those that choose not to swim in chlorine.

The most important thing I want to express is that these systems do work with proper maintenance. For some reason many maintenancepeople are reluctant to embrace copper silver ionization, which is why I havechose to start this discussion.

In my opinion, the problems associated with copper/ silver ionization are miniscule incomparison to the benefits. What I have found with my customers is that honestyis the best policy. They too agree that the benefits of ionization are wellworth any problems that may arise.
