Patching a Plaster Pool

Hey Pool Geniuses,

I have had some people who have asked me how to best patch a plaster pool. This is not in my wheelhouse, so I am hoping I can get some ideas to pass along to help them.

Most of them are "do it yourselfers", so simple would probably best what they are looking for, but I also would like to be able to steer them in the right direction of "do it right the first time".

Any help or resources would be appreciated.

  • We use white hydraulic cement for small patches if it matches the surface OK.  Always use hydraulic cement when patching cracks.  Hydraulic cement expands as it cures, cement shrinks.  We also will mix diamond brite or plaster for small patches to match the surface.

  • Wes,

I think a simple do-it-yourself way is to use epoxy cement and simply push and work the epoxy into the cracks, then rub or wipe to remove the excess and create a smooth finish.  It works well under water.

Perhaps others will have a different suggestion.

    • Thank you Kim. I'll pass this on.

  • There is company in Phoenix, AZ called EZ Patch that has all kinds of plaster and deck repair kits. They also have videos on there use. I don't have there info but google there name

    • Thanks Keith. I'll check it out.

  • Wes, it somewhat depends on what is being patched.  Is it delamination pop-offs or spalling? Or cracks?  Will the pool be drained, or try and do it underwater?

    • Hey Kim,

I'm not sure if it will be drained. It is cracks though, not delamination.
