Raw water fill. No CYA and no chlorine

I have a customer who drained and filled his 30k pool with well water. I have started the tablet feeder and added 5 gallons of acid along with waterfall aeration to get the TA down. It was at 180 before. The pool went green with metals (iron) when the customer added cal-hypo shock shortly after filling. I added 4 quarts of Jack's Blue Stuff and the pool was clear within two hours. (!)

The pool has been crystal clear for 5 days now but since there is no CYA in the water, the FC reads virtually zero. If I take a measurement from the spa right at the jets the CL is good. I am slowly adding stabilizer via a sock in the skimmer, but it's a slow process.

Since the pool was drained due to high CYA, and the customer wants to continue using tablets with the new water, I am cautious about adding too much powdered stabilizer initially. The weather is hot and clear and I'm worried about an algae bloom since the sunlight seems to be getting to the CL as fast as it goes into the water. Any advice on how to add the powdered stabilizer and how much to add for this pool?

Thanks!

Bud

  • When I add stabilizer I usually add it to a disposable robotic cleaner bag and tie it shut, then let the bag hang in front of a return,it dissolves quicker than in the skimmer. If you want to raise your stabilizer from 0 to 50 you will have to add 13 lbs.I usually keep the stabilizer on the lower side to start out depending on how much trichlor is used, maybe 20 or 30ppm and let the tablets bring the stabilizer level up through the season, if your shocking with dichlor it will also raise your stabilizer level.
