Solar-powered Pool Water Purifier?

Has anyone heard of a pool sanitization system called "Floatron"?  I have a relative visiting from Africa, and she wanted to know what I thought of the product.  I've never heard of it, and don't know anything about it, other than what I see on their website.

Apparently, it's a solar powered ionization system that floats in the pool, and reduces the need for chlorine. http://www.floatron.com

It says they've been around for 22 years. I've never even heard of the concept!

If anyone has any information, experience or insights on this product, please share with me!
Thank you,
Brett

  • Yeah, I just cringe at adding metals to a pool! Chlorine works, it's cheap and it's proven. It also is a consumable, so it goes away easily. Some chlorine, water and a little bit of salt. Nothing too scary there, and all easily adjusted!

Call me chicken, but I've gone the "alternative" route (I had the Nature2 once upon a time) before, and I ain't going there again!
  • Risk? The only risk would be not using a proven residual sanitizer, but they recommend using one. Other than that it would be staining and although I agree on that, if this unit actually provides an ion residual it might be weak enough to take forever to start staining and then hopefully not too bad before its caught. Possibly a sequestering agent or such might be able to help at that point. Anyways, everythings a risk in a pool. :)
  • I'm sure Richard will respond once he sees this, but I would stay away from this (or similar) product. Too much risk.
  • A quick read on their site and I think its not a bad idea.

Initially I liked Copper/Silver Ion systems but the problems arose from people allowing the residuals to rise too high either from neglecting chemistry or cranking the Ion generator up to build a residual and then forgetting to turn it back down. With no controller to measure the levels and turn the unit on and off the water would get loaded with copper and stain.

The early units used a high power level and could elevate the ion levels very quickly but then some manufacturers put out units with much lower and better controlled output. These seemed to resolve the issue but turned out it just took longer to elevate the levels. Still the idea was actually one that worked IF you monitored it and kept your chemical levels in the pool properly.

This Solar idea should have a very low feed rate and since it is "In Your Face" in the water you might remember to take it out occasionally as they recommend. I also like that they recommend maintaining a chlorine residual as there have been too many instances of "Use my stuff and forget everything else" products. I wonder though if tethering it close to a wall could cause a stain over time? Kind of like a puck feeder only much less potent.
