  • Anyone that is looking for training on hot tubs hopefully will have some help, through your local pool and spa association, in the near future. APSP has developed a hot tub training maual. I was fortunate to be able to help instruct the class at the Northeast Pool and Spa Association. I believe the manual is finalized. We did not have a test to administer at our class, but I am pretty sure that you will eventually be able to earn a Certified Hot Tub Technician standing if you go through the course. The course that we taught was very hands on and lasted three days. There is definitely room to improve what we did, but overall it was extremely well recieved. I am sure that your local association will plan on doing something with it in the near future. If they don't, let them know that you would like to see something done. That is what they are there for.
I hope you have luck. I think that this type of manual and training for hot tub repair has been long overdue and I am proud to have been a part of it.

    • Spa builders (the U.S. arm of Gecko) has a few good retrofit choices I purchased not to long ago. They come complete with pack, topside, light, heater and blower and all cords for pumps etc.if desired. I purchased these trough Spa Parts Plus but you can use any of a couple of distributors. Over the years I have had about equal sucess with either Balboa or Gecko/Spa Builders I have tried to stay away from most others out of concern for parts availablity down the road.

    • Gecko makes great spa paks. I usually always install a whole new pak into an older spa instead of piece by piece. Trying to repair an old spa piece by piece can be very costly for you and the customer. Many parts are obsolete, and if you are lucky to find what you need, down the road another part is sure to fail. The new spa pak is not that expensive, and you'll be confident you wont have to return for something else later on.
  • Hi Matt:

I've not found any formal spa repair school, but...the equipment manufacturers are available for troubleshooting over the phone. At regional trade shows are workshops with a handson to troubleshoot both digital and pneumatic equipment paks. Plumbing repairs you can pickup by being exposed and literally climbing into a hot tub cabinet, you'll get the hang of the plumbing repairs.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like.

  • Hi. Does anyone have an idea of where I could get some training on spa repair? Preferably something hands-on. I am located in the Chicago area.

    Thank you!

    Matt
    • One of the best sources for information would be either Spa Parts Plus or the actual spa manufacturers themselves.
For Spa Parts Plus you can either visit the website www.spaparts.com or call them at 1-800-521-7587.
As for the manufacturers, check with your local dealers and check with their manufacturers, they wll be happy to welcome you to the factory and train you at zero charge as long as you agree to do some warranty work on occassion. Of course the other training is through the equipment manufacturers themselves as Jeremy suggested.
