TA Levels

We are finding that some of our TA levels are dropping down 20-40 ppm within a 4 month period. Is this normal? If not, what should I be doing to prevent this from happening.Thank you!!!

  • Can you confirm that your team isn't prediluting the acid? (If you don't predilute the muriatic acid before you add, it reduces the TA significantly.) Seen it many many times - "normal" if you don't predilute before adding it as adding straight muriatic is the way to reduce TA. That's a way to monitor service personell as predilution takes more time, yet adding muriatic costs longer term moreso to increase back the TA on the next trip.
  • Thank you to you both!!
  • I agree with Ken - The muratic acid that you add will play a role in reducing the total alkalinity. ESPECIALLY if a large concentration of muratic acid is added at one time. You can actually come close to "zeroing out" the TA if you add too much. Personally, I don't think that 20-40 PPM reduction in a 4 month time span is really that much... I would expect to add alkalinity...

Again - I would emphasize that you need to test first the source water. Here in Jacksonville, FL I see about a 20-40 ppm reduction in a 3 to 4 month period... I always test for TA first... adjust it to parameters then go from there... being careful to keep a reign on pH as excessive pH= excessive acid demand. Excessive acid demand = reduction in TA.
  • It depends on if/how much Muriatic acid your adding to the water. Are you using Trichlor. because that lowers PH. What does your source water test out at.
