The best thing about being your own boss is in my opinion is making your own hours and not having to answer to any one. Also the pride it gives you for being in business for yourself. What’s the best thing for you? Also I was trying to think of a disadvantage but couldn’t really find one!!

  • Picking and choosing my battles.  If a client does meet my standards, I don't need their business.
  • I have to agree that being able to call the shots is the best part, as well as knowing that what you do for the customer is per your standards.  We (my business partner and I) are so much on the same page as far as how to treat a customer and what we expect to provide that we almost don't need to speak!

Once we roll up to a job, and the rig is put in place, we do leave the site.  However, we do not pick the rig back up until the water is exactly where we want it, no matter the time.  We had one pool that we stayed at (the customer was absolutely great!) the job until 10 PM, because we just wanted the CYA to be a bit lower.  Another time we drove 100 miles away to do a job, expecting to lbe completed and back on the road by 4 PM.  It became clear that we needed to stay longer again, and we rolled out a 7 PM.  Neither one of us was upset or angry; we knew what we had to do and we did it.

The thought of having to be told what to do and when by someone else does not excite me!  I put in long hours and am constantly trying to learn more and more (I've only been in the pool industry for 15 years, so there is still much to learn!).  I spend an enormous amount of time educating people on water chemistry, reading up on water and pool associated topics, and posting and reading here!  I wouldn't trade what I do for any 40 hour job in the world!

  • Its good to be KING. King of the pile as i see it. sometimes the pile is so high i cant see over it. =)

The best thing about being your own boss is I have ultimate veto power. I can say "No!, Not not way, not no how, not no but hail no." I also get to say "Abosolutely, so what its dark out, raining out, I'm enroute and will be there in 30 minutes."

Here's the worst part, when the emmployees fall down on the job, I'm the hired grunt, the one to make certain that through the sleet, snow, hail, all of the excuses I get from emmployees, that my company gets the job done.  Working for your self means  I don't get to knock off at 500p because I dont want to go over my 40 hours.  That can get a bit discouraging especially when everyone else is off for the holiday break or I'm still out working pulling up to a pool site at 700pm to start on a repair.

But, not only am I the KING, I'm also the knight in shining armour too.  I get to bring: "Hot Tub Joy," no more leaking pools, working equipment and services to the masses in my big blue sleigh full of parts.  ho ho ho ho, merry christmas everybody.
