WInterizing an AQUA GENIE skimmer/ return

Please help. Even with 26 years in the industry in this area you can always come up with something "new." I just winterized a pool in upstate New York, our frost line is approx. 3'. I encountered a contraption installed in a vinyl liner inground pool called an AQUA GENIE. There is a skimmer box with a built in feeder for special packs of trichlor (bad place for trichlor - but that's for another discussion) the feeder is fed with a small tube teed frim a return line - and there lies the rub. The return is an oblong plate covering an open area under the skimmer box fed by a 2" female npt opening in the center of the bottom of this cavity. The cavity is less than 1" in height - no room to get your fingers in - much less a plug. HELP.

  • Easiest system i have found yet to winterize, I do a lot of them...i use a dry box & small pump..remove return plate...set filter to recirc...leave pump in well & blow through skimmer & back out the return till you get no more water . once you are done clearing lines of water, i dump a gallon of antifreeze in both skimmer & return...plug skimmer port as usual....use a strip of liner cut to size & insert it between return plate & gasket & resecure....this will prevent water from reentering through return.
just have to remember to leave all drain plugs in equipment till after you blow down lines also check for cracks in faceplate before you resecure it...replace if needed...water will migrate through cracks hope this helps
  • Mark, I think winter kit will do just fine, Thanks for your help - my client apreciates it also.
