Wielgus discussed the positive spotlight on swimming today including “prime time” coverage of the Olympic Games and growth in swim clubs. He showed us how the USA Swimming “Make a Splash” campaign is critical to bringing aquatics to children and minorities. He reported that 54% of African American children do not know how to swim, and that each day, 9 people drown in the United States. Dr. Lachocki reinforced the need to act locally, saying, “People love their families; kids love swimming; be remarkable. Sponsor your local swim team. A few hundred bucks goes a long way.”
