Lunchtime speaker Jeff Wiltse, Associate Professor of History, University of Montana, gave an overview of his book “Contested Waters” a Social History of Swimming Pools in America. Alan Lewis, Aquazure AU and writer for Australia’s SPLASH Magazine, commented, “This introspective look at the role of the swimming pools in the USA finds many parallels in the social history of Australian communities. In particular, the relationship between the white and black peoples of both countries, in the way they have dealt, and still deal, with the historical conflicts between the two races.” Wiltse called upon attendees to be attentive to broader social and cultural trends as they look to the future of the aquatics industry.
