"Give me liberty or give me death"....."Live free or Die"

Powerful words expressions of FREEDOM by FREE PEOPLE. But what of our freedoms now? Has the American public grown tired of being FREE and now are ready to surrender control of their lives to the GOVERNMENT!!

Benjamin Franklin who was a regular guest at my great, great, great, great, Grandfathers Inn (may be short a great or two), said it best after signing the Declaration of Independence...."we give you a representative republic for as long as you can keep it". Have we lost it already? Or has the majority of Americans finally awakened to the fact our freedoms are being seized by a runaway government that is no longer representing the Republic and no longer following the will of the majority. By what GOD given right do they (the government) have to decide what is best. Last I knew the Bill of Rights recognized we are endowed by our creator with them.

Are you willing to simply sit back and watch? I for one am not!! Yes I made the list they were keeping last year, yes I received e-mails from the White House telling how mis-informed I was. Funny thing is I actually studied the teachings of Karl Marx and Frederick Engles, but I also studied the teachings of John Stuart Mills. It was Mills writing in his book "On Liberty" which opened my eyes to Libertarianism the believe system I embrace to this day.

Jefferson said it best..."the government that governs least governs best" our present leaders have put our Representative Republic in jeopardy, wake up people before it is too late!

    One day everyone will wake up to ask when did we lose that right? When did we lose our freedom? When did this all happen? Well the answer is yesterday, today, and tomorrow! Everyday the current party in control stays in power we continue to have our rights and liberties eroded. Little by little they work to undermine the work of our Founding Fathers thinking we will not realize what they are doing. I say to you all the time has come to vote them all out of office, and to hold those whose term has not about to expire accountable for their actions. To hold them to their Oaths of Office, requiring them to uphold the Constitution and to Represent the Will of their Constituents! Congress should police itself and hold Elected Officials accountable when the fail to act accordingly. To actually enforce the laws of the land, even if that means the Impeachment of those that refuse to follow the Laws and their Oaths.

    However when the Elected Officials fail then the People must Stand Up and FIGHT by whatever means it takes in order to secure our Rights. I fear my Children's offspring will never see the Freedoms my ancestors and I have enjoyed. Every day this Administration continues to invade our lives seeking to take over more and more of our decisions, rights, and liberties. We need to send them all home to live under the laws they passed, we need to strip them of their cushy retirements, their special healthcare programs and all the perks they enjoy, including banning them from lobbying for at least ten years after holding office.

    The Time has come to rise up and stand for your rights while you still have them!

    "United We Stand...." precisely why this current party in control has systematically worked to pit one segment of the people against the other. By placing the focus against varying groups it keeps your eyes off what is really happening, a classic slight of hand routine. Soon it will be too late as they continue to dismantle our rights and this great country. Today we take a stand and every needs to stand together, we are not (insert your ethnicity) - Americans for that continues to divide us!

    Amen, Chris! I come from a long line of patriots too and was always taught to value freedom and what our forefathers did so w might have it. We should no longer take it for granted. There is an interesting flag hanging in the Alamo that shows a picture of a cannon and the words "Come and Take It". Right before the Texas Revolution started, the dictator Santa Anna was usurping the Constitution and the Texans, who were then part of Mexico, were becoming alarmed. When Santa Anna sent a delegation of soldiers to take away their cannon, they, instead of surrendering it, made this flag and fired on the soldiers instead, refusing to give it up with their defiant slogan, "Come and Take It". This Battle at Gonzales was the first battle of the Texas Revolution, and my ancestor, Captain Jacob Eberly, was there. Today that is how I feel about any usurpation of our freedoms by the government- come and take it. Hopefully we can vote out those who would do so in the near future.

    Here is something to help wake you all up......Fidel Castro was elected to office, Hugo Chavez was elected to office, so was the current Iranian President (whose name won't even try to spell), along with Mussolini and Hitler. Strangely enough each initially had the support of the citizens. Each in the name of doing the right thing seized complete control and establish totalitarian regimes and systematically stripped their citizens of their rights and liberties.

    Our current President also enjoyed overwhelming support of the citizenry initially, he to is pushing an agenda against the will of the vast majority of the citizenry. All in an attempt to give the government more and more control over the people, all in the name of doing good. However the real question becomes good for whom? It is certainly not good for the people when the government becomes bigger and employs more and more people and creates more and more entitlement programs. Especially since the only way the government gets money is to confiscate it from the people. That's right I said it!! The government is confiscating your money, your future, and the future of all generations to come.

    Yet it is not too late! We need to send a message to all branches of government, the time has come.....WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO UNITE AND SEND THEM ALL HOME! VOTE THEM ALL OUT OF OFFICE!! OUR FOUNDING FATHERS SAW THIS DAY COMING, THE DAY WHEN WE AMERICANS WOULD NEED TO RISE UP AGAINST OUR VERY OWN GOVERNMENT TO ONCE AGAIN SECURE OUR FREEDOMS AND PRESERVE OUR LIBERTY.

    It was the book "Freedom to Choose" by Milton Friedman that help me understand the importance of freedom and why capitalism is the best program to bring the greatest amount of prosperity to the most people.

    Great question Que!! There have been several John Galts that were real people throughout history, however the one I beleive you are refering to is a fictional character form Ayn Rands 1957 classic novel Atlas Shrugged. Rand had escaped from the USSR with her family as a young adolescent. Having learned first hand of the oppression from the totalitarian communist regime she became a devout libertarian. Her life lessons were a fundamental part of her writings. With one of the more famous excerpts being a quote of her fictitional character John Galt saying... "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine."
