Draining of Indoor Concrete Pool

We have a customer that has an indoor gunite pool that he wants to drain for an extended period. If there is no hydrostatic relief valve of some sort built into the pool. Is it safe to drain and drill hole in bottom of pool to release pressure? I would like any advise on this. Thanks

  • MANY TIMES WHEN FIBRE GLASSSING POOLS GROUND WATER CAN BE CONTROLLED BY PULLING PLUG IN MAIN DRAIN SUMP. THEN IF AMOUNT OF WATER INGROUND IS NOT DRYED UP A FITTING INSTALLED IN PLUG HOLE AND PIPED TO A PUMP ON DECK. MOST ANY POOL PUMP WORKS. THE CAN RUN DRY AND STILL SELF PRIME. IN RARE CASES HAVE HAD TO DRILL HOLES THRU THE POOL SHELL BECAUSE GRAVEL BED BENEATH THE HOPPER HAS GOTTEN IMPACTED WITH CLAY. THE WHEN DRAINED PLUG THE HOLES WITH HYDRAULIC CEMENT.
  • Barbra,
First, figure out where the pipes are. Then drill 1" holes in the pool a minimum of five times if a hydrostast exists or not. If the hydrostast exists, remove the valve and clean the collection tube with your vacuum. Get free of any liability by getting your customer to accept all liability and to release you, in writing with both parties signing off. Typically, when pools are drained dry over a long time, they suffer and need work when it is time to bring them back on line. The well points are a good idea also. They could cost a lot.
  • Barbara,

You can drill a hole in the pool to relieve pressure, that works. But first I'd determine what extent of a water table issue you have. It may be necessary to have some well points made around the pool prior to attempting to drain it and drill the more permanent hole through the shell.
