Sanitation of Sump Fountain

We have a 1,500 gallon fountain with a submersible sump for the equipment.  My service guys are having a hard time keeping the water clear.  Has anyone had success with adding a submersible feeder or other device to keep the water sanitized?  Your comments are appreciated.

  • Thank you Bruce for your insight, we will consider that as an option as well.
  • Thank you Dennis, I can install an injector in the return plumbing, which model would you suggest?
  • We manufacture ozonators, but don't take this to be biased. Just trying to help. Folks place our products on fountains quite often. Some use an ozonator to reduce the chemical spray/splashout that damages nearby vegetation. Some use our ozonators to simply keep the water crystal clear. Some use ozone in pop-up fountains that have children playing in to reduce potential viruses. Installation depends on several things. If there is a holding tank that is recirculated with a filter the ozonator is simply placed around there the same way you would do a pool or spa. In your case it sounds like you only have a submersible pump so the ozone injector would be placed in the output line of the pump. Depending upon whether there are spray heads on the return or just a flow/spill over fountain there may be an issue installing an ozonator injector directly into the return line due to air being introduced with ozone. In a spill over no problem. With spray heads there may some erratic spray. If there is a holding tank, no issues. Depending upon how bad the alagae currently is you may need to dose with an algaecide and then periodically with an algaestat (reduce level of algaecide) to prevent future growth. Ozone kills algae spores, but they must be in the water and pass by the ozone. Another thing is if you have fish in the fountain you will need to have the ozone exit at the top of the fountain to off-gas. If the ozone is introduced into a tank no issue. dennis.mino@ozonejoes.com
  • Brian, Jan,
With these small non-filtered features, while algae can be allowed to coat walls etc. the water should not be allowed to become stained and/or thick. We do that with a base of bromide and weekly shock with liquid chlorine. If it will not detract from the feature, you can also float bromine tabs. Floating trichlor tabs is not recommended because the low pH of the tab will wipe out your TA very quickly. Frequent shocking is simply a must when other support equipment is not an option.
