Sta-Rite DE Filter Problem

Customer pool has a Sta-Rite System 3 DE filter. Pool looked great for 3 weeks after replacing all grids and spider gasket this spring. Appears to be allowing DE into the pool now. Grids, manifold, etc. all look good.

Several years experience with DE filters, first Sta-Rite DE I've worked on, any ideas?

  • This may sound rudimentary, but did you properly position the valve top when you replaced the spider gasket? Is it a "lot" of DE or just a dusting? A bad oring may cause some minor bypass but if it's major it almost has to be either the grids or the manifold. Have you checked the air bleeder on the manifold?

  • I checked out the schematics (never worked on one, but grids remind me of the Anthony Appollo).Aside from what Scott had mentioned I noticed that there is a union that connects the manifold assembly. You might want to check the o-ring in there. If the customer maintaines his own pool.....you might want to check the grids to make sure there is no D.E. on the inside (They might have vac'ed or re-charged the filter while the valve was on backwash) Hope it works out.
    • I do all the maintenance and have replaced the union o-ring. Suspect the valve may be causing the problem.

      Thanks,

  • Main reasons for DE returning back to the pool are:

    -Torn Grids

    -Broken Manifold (Cracked)

    -Broken/Missing Air Relief Strainer

    -Bad Backwash valve
