Finding New Service Customers

Following up an old lead I got talking with a guy who had just started his own service company ... I saw he had recently signed up with PGN and we got to talking about all the "sharing" by the service folks. I asked how he was finding new accounts and suggested that he get to know local pool builders. I also suggested that he try to create a short lesson presentation and work with a pool builder to teach the new pool owner the pool care basics. It's a win-win as he can charge the pool builder a small fee to provide that service and if the pool owner later decides to look for a pool service company he has already made contact. What do you all think?

"The Checklist Manifesto"

I recently watched an interview with the author of a book called “The Checklist Manifesto” . More than a “to do” list, the checklist identifies all the steps and variables in a process to be checked.

Dr. Atul Gawande, a professor at Harvard Medical School, contends that for many tasks there are an abundance of details that are overlooked on any given day. The emphasis in the book was on the development of a safe surgery checklist which has been successfully applied with remarkable results in many leading hospitals. However, the author suggests that a master checklist can improve procedures in every industry. There are many identifiable stages in pool construction – as pool builders we would break our jobs down to a minimum of 15 separate phases each requiring specific attention to details. In the office there are monthly, quarterly and annual tax & insurance obligations; in sales there are advertising deadlines and budgets. Service companies need to head out on the route with everything they need for the day. Developing a comprehensive guide requires the end user to think through the tasks and will ultimately save time and money by reducing the need for backtracking and do-overs!

Kudos to the PGN

Sales may be a little slower (for some) but the PGN has been a definite bright spot -This sharing of ideas and information by so many different facets of the industrycan only have a positive impact on all those who participate and log on!!As a niche product I had a fairly limited knowledge of many parts of the pool industry;the PGN has provided me a vehicle to learn about a much wider range of issues & products. My sales goal is to talk to 10 new pool builders a day and with the PGN,I am able to reference and share industry topics to build rapport and partnership with prospects. Those of you in cold call sales know what I'm talking about!!As an industry social network it's okay to log on at work!! - in order to follow the discussions and to keep learning new marketing ideas & sales strategies such as "tweeting" and "waving" and "blogging".Thank you Rex, the PGN administration and all of you who have contributed so much valuable & interesting content.

PoolDraw featured in July's AQUA magazine!

We didn't make the cover but check out the featured article about CAD design and PoolDraw in July's AQUA magazine .http://www.aquamagazine.com/default.aspxI'm reposting my previous blog entry where my one key point is that while there is no right product for every pool builder; that decision depends on what you are looking for in a pool design, drawing interface, integration compatibility, provider relationship and end product investment - each and every pool builder will ultimately derive some benefit from their use of design software. Visit the PoolDraw profile page to read comments made by PGN members."pool design software - a tool for every builder, salesperson and designer"Over the last fifteen years, the pool industry has grown to embrace computer technology.Prior to 1995, Auto-Cad was the only design tool available to pool-builders. The introduction of PoolDraw®, a Microsoft Visio add-in with a familiar Windows interface, provided every pool builder, salesperson and designer, with an easy to use technology tool to draw their pool designs, produce construction drawings and save time in their job management process. In 2002 Pool Studio entered the market with an amazing 3D sales tool and today there are many pool builders using a variety of pool design and technology options. However, there are many more who have yet to realize the advantages of pool design software. Now is a good time to get started! In our industry there are a wide range of pool markets, pool companies, salespeople and sales techniques. Some pool job sales require an in-house sales design and computer presentation; another sale might involvea preliminary discussion and then a second appointment with design ideas and job details. Some jobs call fora 3D presentation; for others a 2D sales layout is more appropriate. Whatever the sucessful sales approach, pool design technology should be part of the sale, contribute to the pricing and facilitate the pool job management. The use of design software allows the creation of multiple design options from an initial drawing. With a CAD interface, once the initial drawing has been created – rear home profile and backyard space – pool designs can be saved, modifiedand tweaked over and over again. Plot plans can be scanned or drawn. Construction drawings can be created from theinitial drawing with dimensional information provided for any required measurement. Dimensional information can be saved and exported to an Excel spreadsheet for pricing. A bill of materials can be generated from the drawing page. Specific tools can provide construction relevant information. Company template forms can be created to present job information, standardize permitting material and create job specific plans to be given to contractors. The pool builder, salesperson or designer is able to create their own library of re-usable resources.Using design software to work with your pool designs will help your sales, improve efficiency, save you time and add to your overall professionalism

APRIL IS SWIMMING POOL SAFETY MONTH IN FLORIDA

On Thursday, April 16, both the House and Senate resolutions were acknowledged in each chamber. As a long time member of the FSPA, I am appreciative of their hard work and consistent efforts to represent the best interests of the pool industry in our Florida communities. Visit the FSPA website (linked on the PGN) to learn more about their advocacy efforts and your opportunity to support the pool industry on a local level. The camaraderie and professional fellowship evidenced here on the PGN is also present at local chapter meetings and functions. Membership in our industry advocacy organizations is the difference between just working in the industry and actually being a part of it
