Do you have a policy on not smoking while working? Is it allowed or do you reframe or ask your employees not to smoke while on customers properties wether it be commercial or residential customers? Obviously there are safety issues not to smoke while working as your dealing with chemicals and surrounded by landscaping that could be flammable but it also can look unprofessional if in the customers view. Im a non smoker and wouldn't allow employees to smoke while on the job but it would be okay in the vehicles if they needed to. I do see pool guys smoking on customers properties, whats your policy?

  • It's not so bad as long as it's just tobacco...

  • Our Employees are not allowed to smoke before arriving on the job or while on the job, Not until they are at least 1 mile away from the customers house.
  • I just quit smoking, but my employees can smoke in the truck, not on the job.
  • No smoking on customer's property or in company vehicles.  I've got two really good guys as my director's of first impressions, we've got to look good and smell good.

  • Agreed scott.  Not hiring because someone is a smoker removes a lot of people from the pool.  I am alright with whatever restrictions you want to place on your employees, but not with the outright not hiring of them simply becuase they smoke.

I would also be against employees smoking on the job site, but to say I wouldn't hire a smoker might cost you a shot at a top notch service guy...look at Wes for instance.  Our industry would be a whole lot better off if we had more guys like Mr. Burdine working in it.

  • We do not allow smoking  near customers or their property.   We Do not really think they would like butts in their yard or smoke in their face while communicating with them.
  • I am a smoker (what a waste, I know), but refrain from smoking on customers' property. It just looks bad, and of course is dangerous. None of the other guys with me smoke, so fortunately that's not an issue.
  • We discourage smoking on customer's property for professional reasons, it just looks bad.  That being said, there is no way for us to be able to tell with 100% certainty if people are doing this or not.  I am sure that technicians are smoking on property, but as long as i don't hear about it(and i do ask when i speak with customers) then i am okay with it.
