I would like to know from everyone what industry shows-expos do you either exhibit or attend and why? With so many shows to choose from I would like to know the pros and cons of industry related shows.

  • Cindy we too like the Expo and will be returning this year to exhibit. Our plans for next year is to expand into the Atlantic City and Orlando show. The only other shows we plan on exhibiting at is the Minneapolis Home & Garden show and the Minnesota State Fair in the renewable energy pavilion. Some may say why the Minnesota State Fair its because where else can you get in front of 1.5 -2 million people in a 11 days for only $800.00 Yes Im cheap but this show has been very effective venue for us.

We attend the vegas show this year it was both pools, tubs& out door bbq. I really enjoyed see everything in one trip. I go mostly for the chemicals. For me It's about finding the new and cool. This year I want to go to the Monteray show. I would like to hear from people that attened the classes in Monteray.I have been to just about every class at aqua (veagas) so this year I only did the show.

February is a great time of year to be in Florida - Orlando is an affordable destination and this is a well established regional show.

On the PGN main page there is a link to a recent Aqua article with more info about the show's emphasis on education and the "green" industry.
  • Jeff, I haven't really seen a lot of increase in liner pools in Texas. We have been building custom gunite pools in the Houston area for 38 years and our niche is the very high end of the market. However, one thing that always stays the same in this business is CHANGE, so it could increase. I would think that one good niche for liner pools might be the smaller towns or more isolated areas of Texas where gunite building subs and equipment are not as readily available, but overall, it is a gunite market still.

Jeff, I love the Atlantic City Show and have gone the last couple of years, but am economizing a bit on doing shows this year and am going to be doing the two Texas shows closer to home. My husband and I go to the Vegas show usually- he almost always is winning design awards there. I've done retailing seminars a couple of times when it was the Aqua show. Atlantic City is a little harder for me to get to from Texas but it is a great show. I'm not sure yet if I will do some more this year after the Texas ones. I did GREAT business at the Poolcorp show in Dallas. All the vendors seemed to be doing a good business there and it is nice to get all the branches together in one venue and be able to market to them at once. I sold about 1253 of my pool care books there in two days by myself.

Merry, they say liner pools are taking hold in Texas, do you see any evidence of that? If so, maybe I should look into the shows you refer to.
  • As most people here agree, the Atlantic City show is always a big hit. I am looking forward to this one, as it is always pretty successful. I have heard many people refer to it as the "buying show". I won't personally attest to this, but the attendees definitely come with the right mind-set. Energy efficiency products are going to make a big splash this year I think; the North East is a fore-runner in the energy-conscious branch of the green movement.
We are still debating over the Western show. It is a service-oriented show, so there won't be the retail segment. It is in Long Beach, though, which is sure to be a beautiful trip. Other than those shows, we'll have representation at many of the smaller industry table-top shows, but unless you have reps to go to their regional shows, it is hard to attend all of these due to the travel expenses.
  • As a visitor I prefer the Atlantic city show over the Vegas shows. It feels more personal and I suppose since my entire career has been in this region I have gotten to know most of the players, which in turn makes it something of a family reunion.
I look forward to the AC show every year just to see the folks I haven't seen for a year and do some mingling. The only thing I miss from the "OLD DAYS" is the original location on the boardwalk, gone now, but the ambiance of that old place will forever be in my heart.

  • Has anyone attended the Western Pool Show in California? We exhibited at the Vegas Expo and found it to be better than our expectations and plan on attending in 2009.

We also attend the Minnesota State Fair its a cheap way for us to get in front of 1.5 million people in 11 days. We plan on exhibiting in the Renewable Energy Showcase Building this up coming year. Normally we like to sandwich into the home improvement building but this year it will make more sense to go where we belong. Cal Spas does a huge display at the fair including sponsoring shows etc.. Jeff this may be a good place for you to look into.

  • James,

I've only ever been to the Atlantic City Pool and Spa Show, but they say it's the best and the only one worth going to for a liner manufacturer. Furthermore, it's pretty damn cheap: $1560 for APSP members and first time non-members for a 10x10 booth.

Unfortunately, the registration deadline was Dec 5th, but you can contact them to see if you can get in--there seems to be some space available. Their number is (609) 689-9111

We scanned employees from 107 different companies last year and we picked up a number of new customers. They also give you a list of all the attendees from the show for further solicitation.

The show is fairly regional (North East/East Coast), but I suspect it would be a good audience for you--our attics are hot and our pools are cold.

At the very least, you should take a trip to see what it's all about, and maybe get some ideas for next year. If you do, stop by our booth: 3151. I think the wife is giving away chocolate again this year.

Good luck, and feel free to contact me with any questions.
